pp. 22-30]. The Pope, in spite of the agreement, at once assembles<br />

his troops under Paolo Vitelli, and lays waste the territories of<br />

the Colonna family, and prepares to attack Naples.<br />

l_Iaehiavelli.--During the spring busied with the details of a plan for<br />

the fortification of Florence [Op. iv. 46o ; Relazione di una visita<br />

fatta da N. M. per fortificare Firenze ; Lett. Fam., Op. viiL I97-_oI ].<br />

On May 9 a new magistracy, with the name 'Cinque Procuratori<br />

delle Mura,' is formed, and Machiavelli is appointed their Chancellor<br />

[Op. viii. 202: 'Qui si _ pensato, andando la fortificazione<br />

innanzi, che io faccia l' ufizio del Provvedltore e del Cancelliere,' etc.]<br />

Corresponds with Guicciardmi and Vettori till middle of August<br />

[Lett. Faro. lxiii-lxxiv ; Op. viii. i85 ; from January 3 to August 7].<br />

In August he goes to Guicciardini at the camp of the League in<br />

Lombardy_. On September io is sent by Guicciardini to see the<br />

progress of the operations before Cremona lOp. vii. 456, Spedlzione<br />

al campo di Cremona; Gui<strong>ec</strong>iardini, Op. Ined. iv. pp. 34o, 368. Cf.<br />

also Guicclardmi's letters of September, which contain references to<br />

Machiavelli's letters and reports of affairs at Cremona, none of<br />

whmh appear to have been preserved.] Returns to Florence in<br />

October [Op. viii. 221-226], and draws up a report of the state of<br />

affairs [Op. viii. 215, letter'a un amico'; Villari, iii. 345, note el.<br />

On November 3o is again sent to Guicciardini at Modena [Op. vii.<br />

459, Spedizione a Francesco Guicciardim]; returns to Florence<br />

early in D<strong>ec</strong>ember.<br />

• ho Neapolitan earnpaign.--On January 4, Renzo da Ceri arrives 1527.<br />

at Rome, to whom, together with Paolo Vltelli, is given the<br />

command of the <strong>ec</strong>clesiastical forces; they <strong>press</strong> on the war<br />

against Lannoy, Imperial Viceroy at Naples. Clement VII<br />

summons to Rome, Regnier, Count of Vaudemont, representative<br />

of the Anjou claims to Naples. He goes by sea towards Naples.<br />

After much desultory fighting, the Pope, in want of money and<br />

despairing of assistance from France, consents to a truce [March<br />

I5'_; signed by Lannoy, March 25]. Terms: truce to last eight<br />

months; the Pope to withdraw hm forces from the Neapolitan<br />

territory, and leave Naples to the Emperor; to pardon the<br />

Colonna family; the Imperialists [Bourbon and the Germans] to<br />
