Thus Whistler, according to Huysmans, ˝dans ses<br />

peinture,˝ entering into Verlaine’s realm of nuances in<br />

dreams. It is this concentration on dreams which in part<br />

connects Wilde’s and Huysmans’ work with symbolism. In<br />

Vague 28 (1886), Kahn defined and explained the objectives<br />

of symbolism:<br />

As to subject matter, we are tired of the<br />

quotidian, the near-at-hand, the compulsorily<br />

contemporaneous; we wish to be able to place<br />

the development of the symbol in any period<br />

whatsoever, and even in outright dreams (the<br />

dream being indistinguishable from life). 333
