On <strong>the</strong> same day <strong>the</strong> voting began, but at first, at any rate,<br />

was not taken seriously. Este wrote on <strong>the</strong> nth that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were not as yet thinking seriously <strong>of</strong> getting a Pope elected,<br />

and that <strong>the</strong>re was hardly anyone as yet who would allow<br />

himself to be voted for.^ <strong>The</strong> want <strong>of</strong> unanimity and decision<br />

in <strong>the</strong> conclave was so great that a large number <strong>of</strong> aspirants,<br />

some twenty or more, could flatter <strong>the</strong>mselves with hopes<br />

<strong>of</strong> receiving <strong>the</strong> tiara. '^ <strong>The</strong><br />

well to wait for fur<strong>the</strong>r indications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wishes <strong>of</strong> Philip 11.<br />

It <strong>the</strong>refore frequently happened in <strong>the</strong> early days <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> con-<br />

clave that a considerable number <strong>of</strong> votes were given to a<br />

Cardinal whom no one seriously wished to become Pope, for<br />

<strong>the</strong> sole purpose <strong>of</strong> showing him honour. On September nth<br />

Cueva received seventeen votes, on <strong>the</strong> 13th Lenoncourt had<br />

eighteen, on <strong>the</strong> 14th <strong>the</strong> Cardinal-Infante <strong>of</strong> Portugal had<br />

fifteen and five accessits.'^ In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> Cueva <strong>the</strong>y very<br />

narrowly escaped an unpleasant surprise. <strong>The</strong> Imperial<br />

ambassador had been collecting votes for him, so that at<br />

length thirty-two Cardinals had given him <strong>the</strong>ir promise as a<br />

joke, and without realizing <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir action.<br />

Cueva would have been elected Pope, against <strong>the</strong> will <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

whole conclave, had not a fortunate chance revealed <strong>the</strong><br />

mistake shortly before <strong>the</strong> decisive moment.* <strong>The</strong>re was<br />

great excitement during <strong>the</strong> night <strong>of</strong> September 24th when a<br />

similar danger came to light. Cornaro had obtained for his<br />
