be followed on <strong>the</strong> tenth day by <strong>the</strong> opening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conclave,<br />

was once more not exactly observed on this occasion. <strong>The</strong><br />

solemn services for <strong>the</strong> repose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soul <strong>of</strong> Paul IV. were only<br />

begun on August 23rd, and lasted, with breaks on <strong>the</strong> inter-<br />

vening Sundays and holidays, ^ till September 4th. On <strong>the</strong><br />

following day, after <strong>the</strong> Mass <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Ghost and <strong>the</strong> usual<br />

sermon, preached on this occasion by <strong>the</strong> well-known humanist,<br />

Giulio Pogiano,^ <strong>the</strong> Cardinals went into <strong>the</strong> Vatican for <strong>the</strong><br />

conclave,'^ although no one had <strong>the</strong> least idea that this was<br />

to last for three months and twenty-one days.<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cardinals who were not present in Rome<br />

arrived in <strong>the</strong> Eternal City^ even before <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

obsequies, so that on <strong>the</strong> morning <strong>of</strong> September 5th thirty-<br />

five voters, and on <strong>the</strong> evening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same day, yet ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

five were able to repair to <strong>the</strong> conclave^ ; Armagnac and<br />

Capizuchi remained in <strong>the</strong> city on account <strong>of</strong> illness.^ After<br />

<strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> election proceedings several more Cardinals<br />

arrived in Rome. <strong>The</strong> original number <strong>of</strong> forty electors had<br />
