CARLO CARAFA REINSTATED. 5<br />

Carafa, and his family out <strong>of</strong> his towns <strong>of</strong> Gallese and Soriano<br />

and <strong>from</strong> all <strong>the</strong> States <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church.^<br />

This arrogant demand was received with indignation by <strong>the</strong><br />

Cardinals. When Pirro Taro, <strong>the</strong> Conservator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city,<br />

again appeared on September ist, with <strong>the</strong> representatives<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people, to receive <strong>the</strong> answer to <strong>the</strong>ir request, Cardinal<br />

Carpi, in <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dean, du Bellay, gave <strong>the</strong>m a<br />

severe reprimand on account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> recent excesses, and, at<br />

<strong>the</strong> same time, he forbade <strong>the</strong>m to take any proceedings on<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own authority, and, in fa<strong>the</strong>rly terms, gravely admon-<br />

ished <strong>the</strong>m to keep <strong>the</strong> peace, and to think <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public weal.<br />

Taro, in his reply, sought to make excuses for <strong>the</strong> people by<br />

expatiating on <strong>the</strong> burdens <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war and <strong>the</strong> heavy taxes<br />

during <strong>the</strong> late pontificate, and <strong>the</strong> encroachments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Carafa.^ <strong>The</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Cardinals had already taken <strong>the</strong> part<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carafa family when Count Giovanni Francesco Bagno<br />

had attempted to take possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> little town <strong>of</strong> Monte-<br />

bello, <strong>of</strong> which he had been deprived by Paul IV. in favour <strong>of</strong><br />

Antonio Carafa ;<br />

on August 26th <strong>the</strong> Cardinals had forbidden<br />

<strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> Florence to afford any assistance to Count Bagno.<br />

However, all <strong>the</strong> signs <strong>of</strong> favour, as weU as <strong>of</strong> hostility, which<br />

<strong>the</strong> Carafa family received, were <strong>of</strong> little account in comparison<br />

with <strong>the</strong> fact that, in virtue <strong>of</strong> a decree <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sacred College,<br />

Carlo Carafa was recalled <strong>from</strong> banishment and again put in<br />

possession <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> rights <strong>of</strong> a Cardinal. In view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mere<br />

fact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great number <strong>of</strong> his adherents, <strong>the</strong> prediction <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> French ambassador in Venice that Cardinal Carafa would<br />

play but an unimportant part in <strong>the</strong> coming conclave,*<br />

appeared to be altoge<strong>the</strong>r illusory.<br />

<strong>The</strong> regulation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> canon law that after <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> a<br />

Pope <strong>the</strong> nine days obsequies should be commenced at once, and<br />
