<strong>of</strong> his predecessors already named he falls into <strong>the</strong> defect<br />

<strong>of</strong> unnecessary repetition, a thing which, however, may be<br />

forgiven on account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> zeal with which he served his<br />

government. In spite <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> haste with which he drew up<br />

his reports, his style and language are far more clear and<br />

polished than in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> his predecessors." (II., 40). <strong>The</strong><br />

same judgment holds good <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> despatches <strong>of</strong> Mula <strong>from</strong><br />

his embassy in Rome, which on account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interest <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir contents, were very quickly copied. As will be seen<br />
