3. <strong>The</strong> Dispatches <strong>of</strong> Marcaxtoxio da Mula.<br />

Marcantonio da Mula, who was generall}' spoken <strong>of</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />

Curia as Amulio, came to Rome in <strong>the</strong> <strong>middle</strong> <strong>of</strong> May, 1560,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> successor <strong>of</strong> Mocenigo, and <strong>the</strong>re won particular favour<br />

with Pius IV., who, on February 26th, 1561, honoured him<br />

by bestowing <strong>the</strong> purple on him. By accepting this dignity,<br />

Mula incurred lasting disgrace <strong>from</strong> his owti government.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> this man, who was distinguished in ever}^ way,<br />

and who in 1565 was named prefect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vatican Library,<br />

and died on March 13th, 1570, cf. besides <strong>the</strong> sources cited<br />

Cod. Vatic, lat. 3933, his speech to Pius IV. in 1560 was<br />

printed in Latin and Italian at Venice in 1846, as was a letter<br />

to P. Manutius in <strong>the</strong> Mel. d'archeol.. III., 276 seq. <strong>The</strong><br />

despatches <strong>of</strong> Mula <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Imperial court, where he represented<br />

his country <strong>from</strong> 1552 to 1554, were pubhshed in a<br />

masterly way by Turba in <strong>the</strong> second volume <strong>of</strong> his Venez.<br />

Depeschen. Concerning <strong>the</strong>m Turba says : " Mula is among<br />

<strong>the</strong> most talented <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Venetian ambassadors at <strong>the</strong><br />

Imperial court. He is not a mere mouthpiece, through whom<br />

one feels that o<strong>the</strong>rs are speaking, but he rises superior to <strong>the</strong><br />

events, circumstances and moods, <strong>of</strong> which he is making his
