XXXVlll AUTHOR S PREFACE.<br />

for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> my work by many vahiable hints and<br />

suggestions <strong>drawn</strong> <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> literary remains <strong>of</strong> our mutual<br />

friend. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Anton Pieper, who died so prematurely,<br />

and whose vast researches afforded important matter, especi-<br />

ally for Pius V.<br />

In spite <strong>of</strong> being cut <strong>of</strong>f <strong>from</strong> Rome by <strong>the</strong> war, <strong>the</strong> past<br />

five years could never<strong>the</strong>less be utilized for <strong>the</strong> continuation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> History <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Popes, as <strong>the</strong> extracts <strong>from</strong> archives had<br />

long been collected. <strong>The</strong> difficulties resulting <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> cir-<br />

cumstances <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> times were, however, very great, yet, in<br />

spite <strong>of</strong> this, it was possible to bring <strong>the</strong> description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

pontificates <strong>of</strong> Gregory XIII., Sixtus V., Clement VIII., Paul<br />

v., and Gregory XV. in all essential points, to completion, so<br />

that future volumes will foUow <strong>close</strong>ly upon one ano<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Should God grant me fur<strong>the</strong>r life and health I may <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

hope for <strong>the</strong> happy completion <strong>of</strong> this work, to which I have<br />

devoted my powers since my youth. May it contribute to<br />

<strong>the</strong> resumption <strong>of</strong> relations with foreign scholars, so rudely<br />

broken <strong>of</strong>f by <strong>the</strong> storms <strong>of</strong> war. Historical science cannot<br />

forego such an interchange <strong>of</strong> thoughts and ideas without<br />

suffering grave and lasting damage.<br />
