<strong>the</strong>se latter matters being referred to <strong>the</strong> Pope. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong><br />

Council declared that <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> regulations as to <strong>the</strong> order <strong>of</strong><br />

precedence observed among <strong>the</strong> envoys on this occasion,<br />

no one could claim any rights, while at <strong>the</strong> same time <strong>the</strong><br />

rights <strong>of</strong> no one were impugned. Finally a decree was read<br />

concerning <strong>the</strong> observance and acceptance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council's<br />

decisions.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> decrees had been approved, <strong>the</strong>y proceeded to<br />

read once more all <strong>the</strong> decisions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> preceding Sessions.<br />

Finalty <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>rs were again asked whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y approved<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> closure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council, and <strong>the</strong> confirmation <strong>of</strong> its<br />

decrees by <strong>the</strong> Pope. All gave <strong>the</strong>ir assent, <strong>the</strong> Arch-<br />

bishop <strong>of</strong> Granada alone declaring <strong>the</strong> Papal confirmation<br />

to be unnecessary. With <strong>the</strong> words " Andate in pace,"<br />

<strong>the</strong> first president, Morone, declared <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>close</strong>d.<br />

<strong>The</strong> decrees v/ere confirmed by <strong>the</strong> signature <strong>of</strong> two hundred<br />

and fifty-five fa<strong>the</strong>rs : four Cardinal legates, two cardinals,<br />

three patriarchs, twenty-five archbishops, a hundred and<br />

sixty-eight bishops, seven abbots, thirty-nine proxies for<br />

those who were absent, and seven generals <strong>of</strong> orders.^<br />

When <strong>the</strong> acclamations, led by Cardinal Guise after <strong>the</strong><br />

manner <strong>of</strong> ancient Councils, resounded through <strong>the</strong> Ca<strong>the</strong>dral<br />

<strong>of</strong> Trent and proclaimed <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great work,<br />

many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council could not restrain <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

tears. ^ <strong>The</strong>y were all affected by <strong>the</strong> solemnity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

moment, for <strong>the</strong>y felt that <strong>the</strong> hand <strong>of</strong> God had turned over<br />

a page in <strong>the</strong> <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong> His Church.<br />
