Morone, who regarded <strong>the</strong> situation as very dangerous, and<br />

feared a French schism. His principal hope <strong>of</strong> preventing<br />

matters <strong>from</strong> coming to an extremity lay in Cardinal Guise i<br />

<strong>the</strong> latter had not been present at <strong>the</strong> insulting address <strong>of</strong><br />

du Ferrier, as he had started on September i8th, in company<br />

with several o<strong>the</strong>r French prelates and <strong>the</strong>ologians, for his<br />

long projected visit to Rome.<br />

Pius IV. received <strong>the</strong> French Cardinal, who reached Rome<br />

on September 29th, ^ with every imaginable sign <strong>of</strong> honour ;<br />

Guise had apartments assigned to him in <strong>the</strong> Vatican, where<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pope paid him a very ceremonial visit. ^ <strong>The</strong> two discussed<br />

all <strong>the</strong> questions <strong>the</strong>n pending in a long conversation, and<br />

with regard to du Ferrier's speech Guise gave <strong>the</strong> Pope <strong>the</strong><br />

tranquillizing assurance that <strong>the</strong> envoy had never been<br />

instructed by his king to act in such a manner. In consequence<br />

<strong>of</strong> this, <strong>the</strong> shrewd Pius IV. ordered <strong>the</strong> legates on October<br />

2nd to pay no attention to <strong>the</strong> French protest.^ <strong>The</strong> Pope<br />

showed <strong>the</strong> greatest consideration to Cardinal Guise, and a<br />

complete understanding between <strong>the</strong> two was all <strong>the</strong> more<br />

easily reached as <strong>the</strong> French Cardinal was very glad to be<br />

again on good terms with <strong>the</strong> Pope, both for political and<br />

religious reasons.^ In a consistory on October 8th, Pius IV.<br />

bestowed <strong>the</strong> greatest praise on <strong>the</strong> Cardinal, expressing at<br />

mission <strong>of</strong> Morone to Innsbruck, forms one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most important<br />

events in <strong>the</strong> third period <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council, is deserving <strong>of</strong> treatment<br />

in a special monograph. <strong>The</strong> demands <strong>of</strong> Guise and <strong>the</strong> decisions<br />

made by Pius IV. with regard to <strong>the</strong>m, are <strong>of</strong> very great interest<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have been ga<strong>the</strong>red toge<strong>the</strong>r and published for <strong>the</strong> first time<br />
