extreme to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r are natural to <strong>the</strong> French character.<br />

In this change on <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> Cardinal Guise <strong>from</strong> strong<br />

opposition to becoming <strong>the</strong> supporter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope, personal<br />

reasons had contributed no less than objective ones. Pius<br />

IV. had previously made him <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> appointing him<br />

perpetual legate in France after <strong>the</strong> <strong>close</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council<br />

and <strong>of</strong> entrusting him with full powers, as, for example, <strong>the</strong><br />

granting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chalice to <strong>the</strong> laity, things which to an<br />

ambitious man, where very tempting. While on <strong>the</strong> one<br />

hand, <strong>the</strong> prospect <strong>of</strong> a great and honourable activity in his<br />

own country attracted <strong>the</strong> Cardinal, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand he<br />

shrank <strong>from</strong> plunging his beloved France, already so sorely<br />

tried, into <strong>the</strong> confusion <strong>of</strong> a schism. ^ His startling change<br />

<strong>of</strong> front was at <strong>the</strong> same time made easier for him by <strong>the</strong><br />

amicable settlement arrived at with <strong>the</strong> Spanish envoy,<br />

which was acceptable to <strong>the</strong> French court.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> General Congregation <strong>of</strong> July 14th an agreement<br />

had been come to by almost all <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>rs with regard to <strong>the</strong><br />

whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> decrees. Only <strong>the</strong> Spanish bishops, with <strong>the</strong><br />

exception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishop <strong>of</strong> Lerida, were still opposed to <strong>the</strong><br />

wording <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixth canon, but this difficulty was overcome<br />

by <strong>the</strong> skilful intervention <strong>of</strong> Morone. <strong>The</strong> legate appealed to<br />

Count di Luna, who succeeded in overcoming <strong>the</strong> opposition<br />

<strong>of</strong> his countrymen, and <strong>the</strong> same night communicated <strong>the</strong><br />

fact to Morone.^<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morning <strong>of</strong> July 15th, <strong>the</strong> four legates. Cardinals<br />

Guise and Madruzzo, three patriarchs, twenty-five arch-<br />

bishops, a hundred and ninety-three bishops, three abbots,<br />

seven generals <strong>of</strong> orders, three doctors <strong>of</strong> law, a hundred<br />

and thirty <strong>the</strong>ologians, six procurators <strong>of</strong> bishops who were<br />

absent, and twelve envoys, assembled in <strong>the</strong> Ca<strong>the</strong>dral <strong>of</strong><br />

Trent for <strong>the</strong> XXIIIrd Session, <strong>the</strong> seventh under Pius IV."*<br />
