MORONE AT INNSBRUCK. 317<br />

April loth, <strong>the</strong> vigil <strong>of</strong> Easter, he arrived in Trent. ^ At that<br />

time <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council was almost at a standstill. <strong>The</strong><br />

joy that was felt at <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new legate was increased<br />

when <strong>the</strong> new envoy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King <strong>of</strong> Spain, <strong>the</strong> Count di Luna,<br />

appointed to succeed Pescara, arrived quite unexpectedly on<br />

April 12th. 2<br />

<strong>The</strong> importance and ability <strong>of</strong> Morone at once became<br />

apparent in <strong>the</strong> negotiations upon which he entered with <strong>the</strong><br />

envoys <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> powers who were at Trent, and with Guise and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r distinguished persons, scarcely any <strong>of</strong> whom believed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Pope's real desire for reform.^ <strong>The</strong>se negotiations,<br />

however, could only be provisional, as everything depended on<br />

<strong>the</strong> attitude <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emperor. After Morone had entered upon<br />

his new <strong>of</strong>hce at <strong>the</strong> General Congregation <strong>of</strong> April 13th,'*<br />

he set out at once for <strong>the</strong> Imperial court on April i6th. After<br />

a journey which was rendered very difficult by <strong>the</strong> cold and<br />

rainy wea<strong>the</strong>r, he reached Innsbruck on April 21st. <strong>The</strong><br />

Emperor had been awaiting his arrival with impatience ;<br />

he<br />

went to meet <strong>the</strong> Pope's representative some distance beyond<br />

<strong>the</strong> gates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city, and accompanied him in his entry.<br />

Negotiations were commenced on <strong>the</strong> following day. In a<br />

conversation which lasted for four hours, Morone gave to <strong>the</strong><br />

Emperor answers on all <strong>the</strong> points contained in his two letters<br />

<strong>of</strong> March 3rd. <strong>The</strong> slow progress <strong>of</strong> affairs at <strong>the</strong> Council was<br />

discussed in detail, as were <strong>the</strong> true causes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> evil and <strong>the</strong><br />

means <strong>of</strong> obviating it, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sus-<br />

Navagero, which only took place on April 28. For <strong>the</strong> departure<br />
