DEATH OF GONZAGA AND SERIPANDO. 3II<br />

whi<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Cardinal had sent him to found a college <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Society <strong>of</strong> Jesus. ^<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Congregation <strong>of</strong> Marcli 8th, Seripando, too, was<br />

attacked by a dangerous illness, which caused his death on<br />

<strong>the</strong> 17th. <strong>The</strong> celebrated General <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Augustinians died<br />

as piously as he had lived. He insisted on receiving <strong>the</strong> last<br />

sacraments fully dressed and on his knees. As certain views<br />

which he had formerly advanced, concerning original sin and<br />

justification, had shaken <strong>the</strong> confidence <strong>of</strong> many persons in <strong>the</strong><br />

perfect purity <strong>of</strong> his faith, <strong>the</strong> dying man took <strong>the</strong> occasion to<br />

recite one by one, in <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most distinguished<br />

<strong>the</strong>ologians, <strong>the</strong> articles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Creed, and to swear that he had<br />

believed <strong>the</strong>m all without <strong>the</strong> least doubt.<br />

More than any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council to deplore <strong>the</strong><br />

loss <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir colleagues, who had been distinguished by such<br />

splendid qualities, were <strong>the</strong> two surviving legates, Hosius and<br />

Simonetta. <strong>The</strong>y felt <strong>the</strong> responsibility which was now laid<br />

upon <strong>the</strong>ir shoulders all <strong>the</strong> more heavily as <strong>the</strong> differences <strong>of</strong><br />

opinion regarding <strong>the</strong> relations between <strong>the</strong> primacy and <strong>the</strong><br />

episcopate, and about <strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> residence, continued with<br />

undiminished force, while <strong>the</strong> demands for reform on <strong>the</strong> part<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> French and <strong>the</strong> Emperor were daily growing more<br />

urgent. In addition to all <strong>the</strong>se difficulties <strong>the</strong>re now came<br />

<strong>the</strong> want <strong>of</strong> money caused by <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Gonzaga,^ and <strong>the</strong><br />

outbreak <strong>of</strong> bloody combats among <strong>the</strong> retainers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> French,<br />

Spanish and Italian prelates, in consequence <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong><br />

holding <strong>of</strong> Congregations was altoge<strong>the</strong>r prevented <strong>from</strong><br />

March 9th to <strong>the</strong> 15th. "^<br />
