with <strong>the</strong>ir instructions <strong>of</strong> January ist/ <strong>the</strong> following requests<br />

were set forth : In<br />

order to avoid giving <strong>of</strong>fence to <strong>the</strong> Pro-<br />

testants, it was desired that no pronouncement as to <strong>the</strong><br />

continuation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council should be made at present ;<br />

that<br />

<strong>the</strong> next Session should be postponed as long as possible ;<br />

that questions <strong>of</strong> dogma should in <strong>the</strong> meantime be adjourned,<br />

and less important matters dealt with ;<br />

a condemnation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Confession <strong>of</strong> Augsburg should be avoided in drawing up <strong>the</strong><br />

Index ; <strong>the</strong> Protestants must receive safe-conduct in <strong>the</strong><br />

widest sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term, and in <strong>the</strong> form which <strong>the</strong>y <strong>the</strong>m-<br />

selves wished. <strong>The</strong> provisional reply <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> legates to <strong>the</strong>se<br />

demands was <strong>drawn</strong> up in very conciliatory terms.-<br />

On February 17th <strong>the</strong> legates admonished <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council to keep secret <strong>the</strong> questions submitted to <strong>the</strong>m<br />

for consideration ; <strong>the</strong>y were only to be made known when<br />

<strong>the</strong> decrees had been <strong>drawn</strong> up and published in <strong>the</strong> public<br />

Session.^<br />

At <strong>the</strong> General Congregation <strong>of</strong> February 24th <strong>the</strong> Bishop<br />

<strong>of</strong> Fiinfkirchen delivered his mandate as Hungarian envoy.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> same day <strong>the</strong> Jubilee indulgence granted by <strong>the</strong> Pope<br />

in a brief <strong>of</strong> February 14th, was published.^<br />

<strong>The</strong> XVIIIth Session, <strong>the</strong> second under Pius IV., was held<br />

on February 26th. ^ <strong>The</strong> five legates were present, with<br />

Cardinal Madruzzo <strong>of</strong> Trent, three patriarchs, sixteen arch-<br />

bishops, a hundred and five bishops, four abbots, five generals<br />

<strong>of</strong> orders, fifty <strong>the</strong>ologians and four orators. High Mass<br />

was celebrated by <strong>the</strong> Patriarch <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem, Antonio Elio,<br />

after which a sermon was preached by Antonio Cauco, Arch-<br />
