DEMANDS OF THE SPANISH BISHOPS. 263<br />

to be arranged according to <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.'<br />

Before <strong>the</strong> meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Congregation, <strong>the</strong> legates<br />

had been successful in settling a difficulty which might have<br />

proved very dangerous for <strong>the</strong> Council which was on <strong>the</strong><br />

point <strong>of</strong> being opened. On January 5th, <strong>the</strong> Archbishop<br />

<strong>of</strong> Granada, Pedro Guerrero, had gone to Seripando to demand,<br />

in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spanish bishops, that every ambiguity<br />

should be avoided at <strong>the</strong> opening, and that <strong>the</strong> Council should<br />

be clearly and definitely designated as a continuation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> former one. On January nth Guerrero repeated his<br />

demand in <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> four legates and Cardinal<br />

Madiuzzo, and threatened to make a protest. <strong>The</strong> legates<br />

did everything <strong>the</strong>y could to avoid this, and at <strong>the</strong> last<br />

moment <strong>the</strong>ir efforts were crowned with success. <strong>The</strong> archbishop<br />

withdrew his request, after having been assured by<br />

<strong>the</strong> legates that no expression would be used at <strong>the</strong> opening<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council which could be taken as a declaration against<br />

continuation ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> Council would be opened exactly in accord-<br />

ance with <strong>the</strong> text <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bull <strong>of</strong> convocation, <strong>the</strong> declaration<br />

<strong>of</strong> continuation would follow at <strong>the</strong> fitting time, and at <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>close</strong>, <strong>the</strong> earlier decrees, <strong>drawn</strong> up under Paul III. and<br />

Julius III. toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> new decisions, would receive<br />

<strong>the</strong> confirmation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope.^<br />
