Trent on February 24th. ^ <strong>The</strong> important position <strong>of</strong> secre-<br />

tary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council was entrusted once more to Angelo<br />

MassareUi, Bishop <strong>of</strong> Telese ; his appointment followed on<br />

February 2nd, and he left Rome on March nth, reaching<br />

Trent on <strong>the</strong> 26th.<br />

<strong>The</strong> legates <strong>the</strong>n in Rome, Seripando and Simonetta,<br />

received <strong>the</strong> legatine cross in a secret consistory <strong>of</strong> March<br />

17th. 3 In <strong>the</strong> same consistory <strong>the</strong> Pope exhorted all <strong>the</strong><br />

bishops to repair to Trent.* <strong>The</strong> bull <strong>of</strong> appointment was<br />

sent to Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga on March 22nd, with instructions<br />

to proceed immediately to Trent. ^ On March<br />

15th, Cardinal Borromeo informed Hosius by letter <strong>of</strong> his<br />

appointment as legate, instructing him to do everything in<br />

his power to induce <strong>the</strong> Emperor to send representatives to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Council, and <strong>the</strong>n to go himself without delay to Trent.<br />
