240 HISTORY OF THE POPES.<br />

on June 4th. This prince, as Delfino wrote <strong>the</strong>nce to Rome<br />

on <strong>the</strong> loth, surpassed all o<strong>the</strong>rs in his zeal for <strong>the</strong> preservation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Catholic faith. Delfino also discussed with Albert<br />

<strong>the</strong> religious disunion among <strong>the</strong> Protestants, and <strong>the</strong>y rightly<br />

came to <strong>the</strong> conclusion that <strong>the</strong> final settlement <strong>of</strong> religious<br />

differences lay, not with <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ologians, bat with <strong>the</strong> princes.<br />

Delfino repeated on this occasion, what he had previously<br />

insisted upon, that too great hopes for <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Catholic Church in Germany must not be built on <strong>the</strong> dis-<br />

sensions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Protestants. <strong>The</strong> position continued to be<br />

one <strong>of</strong> extreme danger, and <strong>the</strong>y must in every way do <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

utmost to indace some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Protestants to take part in <strong>the</strong><br />

Council.^<br />

<strong>The</strong> result <strong>of</strong> Delfino's mission was, on <strong>the</strong> whole, no more<br />

successful than that <strong>of</strong> his colleague, Commendone. He<br />

had, it is true, received promises <strong>from</strong> several bishops, but<br />

<strong>the</strong> Protestant Imperial cities had given him nothing but<br />

refusals.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> same way as in Germany, <strong>the</strong> Protestant Cantons<br />

<strong>of</strong> Switzerland also showed <strong>the</strong>mselves, under various pretexts,<br />

unfavourable to <strong>the</strong> Council. <strong>The</strong> five Catholic Cantons,<br />

on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, to which <strong>the</strong> Bishop <strong>of</strong> Como, Gian Antonio<br />

Volpi, communicated <strong>the</strong> conciliar bull, showed <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

ready to be represented at <strong>the</strong> Council by delegates. In a<br />

short time Freiburg, Soleure and Glarus joined <strong>the</strong> Forest<br />

Cantons.^<br />
