it is to be opened <strong>the</strong>re under<br />

<strong>the</strong> repeal <strong>of</strong> each and every suspension, on Easter Sunday<br />

next.^ <strong>The</strong> patriarchs, archbishops, and all those who,<br />

according to common law, or privilege, or prescriptive law or<br />

right, have a seat and vote on <strong>the</strong> Council, are admonished to<br />

appear at Trent on <strong>the</strong> appointed day. A request is addressed<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Emperor and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r princes, that if it be impossible<br />

for <strong>the</strong>m to be present at <strong>the</strong> Council in person, <strong>the</strong>y shall at<br />

least send envoys, and see that <strong>the</strong> prelates undertake <strong>the</strong><br />

journey without delay, and are in a position to fulfil <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

duty.<br />

On November 30th copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bull, with <strong>the</strong> accompanying<br />

brief, were sent to <strong>the</strong> Catholic princes. ^ On <strong>the</strong><br />

same date a brief was sent to all <strong>the</strong> bishops <strong>of</strong> France,<br />

containing an invitation to <strong>the</strong> Council, a special one being<br />

sent to Cardinal Tournon.^ On Sunday, December 2nd,<br />

<strong>the</strong> bull <strong>of</strong> convocation was made pubhc, by being read<br />

in St. Peter's and <strong>the</strong> Lateran, and by being affixed in <strong>the</strong><br />

usual places.'*<br />

By <strong>the</strong> words " under repeal <strong>of</strong> each and every suspension "<br />

<strong>the</strong> buU gives expression to <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> Council, in<br />
