on a little bier, which was covered with a black, gold-<br />

embroidered cloth, beside <strong>the</strong> statue to <strong>the</strong> Apostle St. Paul<br />

at <strong>the</strong> entrance to <strong>the</strong> bridge ; at his right, on <strong>the</strong> ground,<br />

on miserable rags, lay his bro<strong>the</strong>r-in-law, and at his left,<br />

Lionardo di Cardine. Only in <strong>the</strong> evening were <strong>the</strong> bodies,<br />

hke those <strong>of</strong> ordinary criminals, taken by <strong>the</strong> Bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Misericordia to S. Giovanni Decollato, and finally buried in<br />

<strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Minerva, in <strong>the</strong> family chapel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Annun-<br />

ciata. <strong>The</strong> body <strong>of</strong> Cardinal Carafa was also taken later to<br />

this church, and buried in <strong>the</strong> same chapel.^<br />

A light placed on <strong>the</strong> summit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Castle <strong>of</strong> St. Angelo<br />

informed Pius IV. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> carrying out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sentence ; his<br />

severity caused terror on every side.^ Many in Rome blamed<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pope for having been too harsh ; it was especially found<br />

fault with that <strong>the</strong> Cardinal had been put to death hke <strong>the</strong><br />

rest, and that <strong>the</strong> bodies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three o<strong>the</strong>rs, though <strong>the</strong>y had<br />

deserved to die, should have been buried like ordinary<br />

criminals.^ For several days fears were entertained for<br />

<strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three o<strong>the</strong>r Cardinals who were still in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Castle <strong>of</strong> St. Angelo,'* but <strong>the</strong> representative <strong>of</strong> Cosimo I.<br />
