justice with mercy. ^ <strong>The</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> PaUano was, in <strong>the</strong> mean-<br />

time, again brought <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tor di Nona to <strong>the</strong> Castle <strong>of</strong><br />

St. Angelo, evidently that he might be confronted with his<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r. It was at once rumoured that two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> guards had<br />

been arrested, and it occasioned a still greater sensation when<br />

soldiers were secretly concentrated in <strong>the</strong> city.^<br />

In <strong>the</strong>se days <strong>of</strong> excitement <strong>the</strong> great creation <strong>of</strong> Cardinals<br />

took place which was connected with <strong>the</strong> faU <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carafa.<br />

For a long time <strong>the</strong>re had been talk <strong>of</strong> an increase <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sacred<br />

College, and this took place quite unexpectedly on February<br />

26th, 1561.^ No less than eighteen Cardinals were appointed,<br />

among <strong>the</strong>m such excellent' men as Girolamo Seripando,<br />

Stanislaus Hosius, Ludovico Simonetta, Marcantonio Mula<br />

and Bernardo Navagero. <strong>The</strong>se received <strong>the</strong> purple in con-<br />

February 26, 1561, that " conflitti et controversie " had arisen<br />

<strong>the</strong>rein, so that it only ended at <strong>the</strong> twenty-second hour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mentioned by Sickel, Konzil, 179). On <strong>the</strong> same day Tonina<br />

writes : *I1 Papa e stato in pensiero solo di quattro o sei al piu,<br />

poi di dieci et poi di tredici sino a questa mattina, et ultimamente<br />

si e risoluto de desdotto, a tal che hieri sera solo si tratto dell'<br />

abate di Gambara, ne prima vi era pensamento alcuno, et tutto<br />

hieri non si fece altro che far congregationi duplicate sopra il,<br />

patriarca d' Aquileia, il quale finalmente e stato escluso, sotto<br />

pretesto che gia fu inquisito d' eresia de non so che articolo della<br />

giustificatione. Si e ragionato tutti di anco che S.S*^ si reservava<br />

m petto I'ill^^o S. Federico nostro fratello di V. Ecc. et alcuni anco<br />

dicevano che forse 1' haveria potato pubhcare, et da ciascuno era<br />

tenuto che dovesse ispedir prima la causa de Caraffi, come si havea<br />

ragionato nella congregatione, della causa loro, tutta via quasi<br />

un subito poi S. S*^'^ si n' e spedita (Gonazga Archives, Mantua).
