which he had not brought upon himself, that he could promise<br />

him nothing, but that he would take care that he did not come<br />

to want.^<br />

<strong>The</strong> Cardinal suffered no torture, ei<strong>the</strong>r owing to <strong>the</strong> fact<br />

that it was considered impossible to force him by that means<br />

to an admission <strong>of</strong> his guilt, or because, which is much more<br />

hkely, several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cardinals, especially Cueva, protested<br />

against such a procedure."'^ <strong>The</strong> prisoner again took courage<br />

when he escaped torture, and still hoped that <strong>the</strong> King <strong>of</strong><br />

Spain would save him. In Rome, where <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caiafa<br />

had been <strong>the</strong> great topic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day, interest in <strong>the</strong> long <strong>drawn</strong>-<br />

out trial gradually began to flag.^<br />

Only at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> September did <strong>the</strong> special enquiry<br />

approach its end. <strong>The</strong> documents were copied and a special<br />

envoy was to convey a full summary to Philip II. '^ <strong>The</strong><br />
