<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> policy <strong>of</strong> Paul IV., induced that Pope, as well as France,<br />

by means <strong>of</strong> falsehood and deceit, to wage <strong>the</strong> unhappy war<br />

against Spain. All three accused were also charged with<br />

having been guilty <strong>of</strong> great frauds in <strong>the</strong> administration <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> States <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church. Carlo and <strong>the</strong> Duke would also<br />

have to answer for grave misuse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir authority, especially<br />

in <strong>the</strong> administration <strong>of</strong> justice, and Cardinal Alfonso for<br />

imlawful personal enrichment at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong><br />

Paul IV.<br />

<strong>The</strong> trial <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accused began in <strong>the</strong> Castle <strong>of</strong> St. Angelo<br />

on Juty 8th, and lasted for fully three months.^ While<br />

compromising documents which were seized by order <strong>of</strong> Pius IV.,<br />

and were used in formulating <strong>the</strong> accusation. <strong>The</strong> *Lettere<br />
