announced to Cardinal Carafa that His Holiness wished to<br />

speak to him. <strong>The</strong> Cardinal, in joyful expectation, followed<br />

<strong>the</strong> chamberlain by a secret staircase to <strong>the</strong> Papal Hall <strong>of</strong><br />

Audience, where <strong>the</strong> groom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chambers <strong>the</strong>n on duty<br />

requested him to wait. Soon afterwards Cardinal Alfonso<br />

Carafa also arrived, whereupon tho Captain <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Papal<br />

Guard, Gabrio Serbelloni, appeared, and announced that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were both under arrest. While Alfonso obeyed in<br />

silence, Carlo cried out boldly : " This is <strong>the</strong> reward for my<br />

valuable services ! " Both Cardinals were at once conducted<br />

by <strong>the</strong> secret passage to <strong>the</strong> Castle <strong>of</strong> St. Angelo.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Governor <strong>of</strong> Rome and <strong>the</strong> Procurator- Fiscal proceeded<br />

at <strong>the</strong> same time, accompanied by numerous police, to <strong>the</strong><br />

Palazzo Carafa in <strong>the</strong> Piazza Navona, where <strong>the</strong>y presented<br />

<strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> Paliano with a warrant for his arrest, and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

took him also to <strong>the</strong> Castle <strong>of</strong> St. Angelo. <strong>The</strong> same morning<br />

similar treatment was given to all <strong>the</strong> intimates and particular<br />

friends <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two Cardinals. Among <strong>the</strong> associates <strong>of</strong> Carlo,<br />

this fate befell Cesare Brancaccio, his secretary, Urbino, his<br />

majordomo and four <strong>of</strong> his attendants, whilst among <strong>the</strong><br />

intimates <strong>of</strong> Cardinal Alfonso, his secretary, Paolo Filonardo,<br />

and three o<strong>the</strong>r members <strong>of</strong> his household were arrested.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Count d'Alife and Lionaido di Cardine also fell into <strong>the</strong><br />

hands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> police, but some few, such as <strong>the</strong> Bishop <strong>of</strong><br />

Civita di Penna, Vico de'Nobili, and Matteo Stendardi,<br />

succeeded in escaping. <strong>The</strong> Marquis <strong>of</strong> Montebello was<br />

in Naples at <strong>the</strong> time. After <strong>the</strong> arrests, all <strong>the</strong> papers<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carafa, even <strong>the</strong> ordinary housekeeping books, were<br />

<strong>the</strong>y filled seven or eight chests.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> Florentine ambassador brought <strong>the</strong> news <strong>of</strong><br />

seized ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> arrest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir two colleagues, <strong>of</strong> which he had been a<br />

witness, to <strong>the</strong> Cardinals assembled in <strong>the</strong> Hall <strong>of</strong> Consistories,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re at once arose a murmuring and whispering, while<br />

astonishment and fear took possession <strong>of</strong> all present. Several,<br />

like Cardinal Vitelli, endeavoured to conceal <strong>the</strong>ir dismay,<br />

but Este and o<strong>the</strong>rs did not hide <strong>the</strong>ir displeasure. When<br />

Pius IV. at last appeared, it could clearly be seen <strong>from</strong> his<br />

expression how pleased he was that <strong>the</strong> a,ffair had succeeded
