fear as <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> old enemy <strong>of</strong> his house, Giovanna<br />

d'Aragona Colonna, who had been obliged to fly in disguise<br />

<strong>from</strong> Rome four years before, now made a triumphal entry<br />

into <strong>the</strong> city, many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Romans, including <strong>the</strong> guard and<br />

<strong>the</strong> relatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope, going to meet her. On <strong>the</strong> following<br />

day she had an audience <strong>of</strong> ceremony.^<br />

On June 6th <strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> Pahano also leturned to Rome.<br />

In consequence <strong>of</strong> favourable news <strong>from</strong> Spain both he and<br />

his bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Cardinal were in <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> spirits ; in <strong>the</strong><br />

evening <strong>the</strong>y amused <strong>the</strong>mselves with music and dancing<br />

in <strong>the</strong> company <strong>of</strong> loose women.-<br />

A secret consistor}^ had been arranged to take place in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Vatican on <strong>the</strong> morning <strong>of</strong> June 7th. ^ This was held<br />

in <strong>the</strong> apartment situated between <strong>the</strong> Appartimento Borgia<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Sala Ducale, which is now called <strong>the</strong> Sala Guardaroba.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Cardinals were awaiting <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope<br />

when Aurelio Spina, a chamberlain <strong>of</strong> Cardinal Borromeo,<br />

89 seq. <strong>The</strong> arrest <strong>of</strong> del Monte, accoixling to Massarelli, in<br />

Merkle, II., 345, was " ob duo homicidia suis manibus perpetrata<br />

in civitate Nucerina in Umbria, in personam scilicet patris et<br />

filii ibi magistri cursorum, dum sede vacante Pauli IV. ex Venetiis<br />
