Pope many hours <strong>of</strong> anxiety <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> his reign.<br />

Cardinal Madruzzo <strong>of</strong> Trent interested himself in <strong>the</strong> German<br />

nephews to such an extent as to cause <strong>the</strong> Borromei considerable<br />

anxiety and displeasure. ^ In order to give <strong>the</strong> Hohenems<br />

family satisfaction and to put an end to <strong>the</strong>ir intrigues against<br />

<strong>the</strong> Borromei, Pius IV. determined to get <strong>the</strong>m out <strong>of</strong> Rome<br />

by sending <strong>the</strong>m on honourable missions.^ Mark Sittich von<br />

Hohenems was, despite his very worldly inclinations, appointed<br />

Bishop <strong>of</strong> Cassano in 1560, and sent in <strong>the</strong> June <strong>of</strong> that year to<br />

<strong>the</strong> court <strong>of</strong> Ferdinand I., for which mission he was prepared<br />

by being first raised to <strong>the</strong> bishopric <strong>of</strong> Constance. On<br />

February 26th in <strong>the</strong> following year, Mark Sittich, although<br />

he was by no means fitted for it, received <strong>the</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong><br />
