quarters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emperor, When Alessandro Farnese returned<br />

to Rome he was accompanied by Gian Angelo, and a brief<br />

<strong>of</strong> July 23rd, 1547, decreed his appointment as Vice-Legate<br />

in Bologna,^ where his friend Morone held <strong>the</strong> post <strong>of</strong> Legate.<br />

In September <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same year Medici had to hurry <strong>from</strong><br />

Bologna to Parma, on receipt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> news <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> murder <strong>of</strong><br />

Pier Luigi Farnese, and it was mainly due to <strong>the</strong> energetic<br />

measures adopted by him that <strong>the</strong> city was saved for <strong>the</strong><br />

Farnese.^<br />

Gian Angelo de' Medici was thus obliged to spend fifteen<br />

years in hard work <strong>of</strong> many kinds, before he was at last<br />

assured <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> purple, which was only bestowed upon him<br />

when, on April 8th, 1549, Paul III. held his last creation <strong>of</strong><br />

Rome, where he received S. Padenziana as his titular church.<br />

Among those who <strong>of</strong>fered him <strong>the</strong>ir congratulations was <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> coat <strong>of</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> his house.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> conclave held after <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Paul III., Medici<br />

supported <strong>the</strong> Imperialist party, and had a decisive influence<br />

in <strong>the</strong> election <strong>of</strong> JuUus III. <strong>The</strong> new Pope gave him his<br />

confidence and associated him with <strong>the</strong> preliminary work in<br />

connection with <strong>the</strong> reform <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conclave.^ During <strong>the</strong><br />

war concerning Parma in <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 1551, Medici remained<br />

as legate with <strong>the</strong> Papal army, his bro<strong>the</strong>r, Gian Giacomo,<br />

being in command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Imperial troops. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

year, <strong>the</strong> Cardinal legate seems to have been himself res-<br />

ponsible for his recall <strong>from</strong> his troublesome post, but <strong>the</strong><br />
