Value for honey and pollen: valuable for N and P in early spring and very late fall<br />

orientalis (Lenten rose) are of equal value to bees and bloom a little later, in Apr. 35 .<br />

Notes: evergreen; flowers white and borne singly.<br />

Value for honey: very attractive for N; flowers after the fruit bloom (Prunus) and is<br />

the source of surplus H where it is common 72 .<br />

Notes: needs moist soil; purple flowers in a loose umbel; foliage used as a pot-herb;<br />

tender shoots eaten by N. American Indians; found growing wild from Que. to Man.;<br />

rich woods and damp clearings, S. to w.N.E. and beyond Can. range 23 .<br />

Hyssopus officinalis L.<br />

Value for honey: HP4/5 16 ; although the corolla is 10 mm long, it widens at its mouth<br />

into a funnel shape which allows the honeybee access to all the N 35 ; extremely<br />

attractive to bees.<br />

Notes: a fragrant introduced herb that is used for perfumery as well as in cooking 35 ;<br />

best grown in mass and looks attractive as an edging plant 35 ; propagated easily by<br />

seeds or cuttings; dry pasture and roadsides, locally abundant s. and w. N.E. to Ont. and<br />

S. beyond Can. range 23 . Sometimes incorrectly referred to as H. vulgaris and should<br />

not be confused with anise hyssop, Agastache foeniculum.
