several o<strong>the</strong>r treatises <strong>of</strong> similar tenor were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> collection <strong>of</strong><br />

Mart<strong>in</strong> V, which <strong>in</strong> addition conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> compendium <strong>of</strong> superstitious<br />

practices <strong>and</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e entitled Kiranides.170 <strong>The</strong> August<strong>in</strong>ian<br />

library at Canterbury also <strong>in</strong>cluded a large number <strong>of</strong> works<br />

<strong>in</strong> this category.'7'<br />

For <strong>the</strong> most part <strong>the</strong> private collections made dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fourteenth<br />

<strong>and</strong> fifteenth centuries did not long rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tact after <strong>the</strong><br />

deaths <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir owners. In some cases immediate dispersal followed.<br />

In o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>the</strong> libraries were ei<strong>the</strong>r sold to some o<strong>the</strong>r collector<br />

as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong> Pico's books to Card<strong>in</strong>al Domenico<br />

Grimani; or were bequea<strong>the</strong>d to religious or monastic<br />

establishments.'72 Where <strong>the</strong> latter was true, provision was made<br />

that <strong>the</strong> books might be loaned out for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> lay citizens as<br />

well as <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> religious community. <strong>The</strong> library<br />

<strong>of</strong> St. Victor <strong>in</strong> France was especially fortunate <strong>in</strong> receiv<strong>in</strong>g a large<br />

number <strong>of</strong> bequests. This was also true <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sorbonne <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

establishments connected with <strong>the</strong> universities.'73 Hence it might<br />

be concluded that <strong>the</strong> fate <strong>of</strong> many precious early classical manuscripts,<br />

rescued from a neglected but probably more permanent<br />

haven <strong>in</strong> monastic establishments, was that <strong>of</strong> only grac<strong>in</strong>g temporarily<br />

<strong>the</strong> library shelves <strong>of</strong> a humanist or his patron. Those more<br />

fortunate than o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong>ten found <strong>the</strong>ir way back aga<strong>in</strong> by <strong>the</strong><br />

testaments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir erstwhile guardians to o<strong>the</strong>r monastic or ecclesiastical<br />

houses; while <strong>the</strong> less fortunate succumbed to <strong>the</strong> ravages<br />

<strong>of</strong> fire or war <strong>and</strong> disappeared among <strong>the</strong> booty or spoils <strong>of</strong> conquest.<br />

storico della lett. ital., I (1883), 43. <strong>The</strong> books on dreams were by Leo Justus,<br />

Richard <strong>of</strong> St. Victor, <strong>and</strong> Solomon. See also [Girolamo d'Adda], Libreria Visconteo-Sforzesca<br />

del Castello di Pavia, no. 978, 967, <strong>The</strong>se works were also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

library <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gonzaga at Mantua as well as <strong>the</strong> treatises on necromancy: Girolla,<br />

172 Sabbad<strong>in</strong>i, Le scoperte dei codici (1905), 188 ff., provides a good many<br />

examples <strong>of</strong> such bequests.<br />

173 L. Delisle, Cab<strong>in</strong>et des manuscrits, II, gives <strong>the</strong> list <strong>of</strong> such benefactors to<br />

<strong>the</strong> library <strong>of</strong> St. Victor, 209 ff.; <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> Sorbonne, 142 ff. F'or bequests to <strong>the</strong><br />
