serve to <strong>in</strong>dicate <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease. It is <strong>of</strong> course difficult<br />

to determ<strong>in</strong>e how much <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> humanists <strong>in</strong> classical<br />

texts caused this growth <strong>in</strong> numbers or what proportion can be<br />

credited to <strong>the</strong> natural tendency for extant records to be more<br />

numerous as we approach our own time. Possibly <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong><br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> exchang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ventories <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir collections, that Pico<br />

della Mir<strong>and</strong>ola <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r humanists <strong>in</strong>dulged <strong>in</strong>, resulted <strong>in</strong> more<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m be<strong>in</strong>g preserved.4 <strong>The</strong> contribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g press<br />

to <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se libraries is also difficult to evaluate s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ted books did not at first f<strong>in</strong>d a ready acceptance among <strong>the</strong><br />

wealthy bibliophiles who preferred <strong>the</strong> more costly <strong>and</strong> more f<strong>in</strong>ely<br />

wrought h<strong>and</strong> copies. Yet <strong>the</strong> humanists <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r scholars whose<br />

chief <strong>in</strong>terest was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> content ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> externals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

books welcomed <strong>the</strong> products <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> presses.<br />

<strong>The</strong> size <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se libraries varied considerably both as to <strong>the</strong><br />

number <strong>of</strong> codices listed <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> contemporary reports <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

<strong>The</strong> latter are notoriously exaggerated,5 <strong>and</strong> separate items listed<br />

give no real <strong>in</strong>dex to <strong>the</strong> actual number <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual treatises, s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

it was customary to b<strong>in</strong>d several toge<strong>the</strong>r, even <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong><br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ted books. A library <strong>of</strong> about 800 or 900 items might be said<br />

to constitute a very fair-sized collection. That <strong>of</strong> Pico della<br />

Mir<strong>and</strong>ola, usually adjudged one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g private libraries<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifteenth century numbered some 1190 items.6 Numbers<br />

<strong>and</strong> size are, however, <strong>of</strong> much less importance than <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> contents for our purpose, which is that <strong>of</strong> determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellectual<br />

<strong>in</strong>terests <strong>and</strong> resources that <strong>the</strong>se libraries reflect. <strong>The</strong>re<br />

seems little need for reiterat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>in</strong> this regard <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> extant <strong>in</strong>ventories, for despite <strong>the</strong> brevity <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>adequacy <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir descriptions <strong>the</strong>se contemporary catalogues do provide tangible<br />

evidence for <strong>the</strong> presence or absence <strong>of</strong> particular writ<strong>in</strong>gs.7<br />
