one particular thing. Now both you and the <strong>Wizard</strong> dissolved<br />

away during that experience, but for myself I would say that when<br />

I woke up, the sense of me as a separate person <strong>with</strong> a separate<br />

sentience located in my cranium, that dissolved. But there was<br />

still an awareness of my body as an apparent object; no more solid<br />

maybe than the room or anything else; no more mind. But the<br />

idea of it as separate, that dissolved away. I just thought I’d throw<br />

out there maybe for people who feel that they haven’t been<br />

enlightened, that maybe they have simply in the experience of<br />

their lack of separateness.<br />

WIZARD: Your window pane is pretty clear. Mine needed<br />

dynamite. [Laughter]<br />

CHUCK HILLIG: Well, the greatest obstacle according to Ramana<br />

Maharshi to enlightenment is to get past this idea, this obstacle,<br />

and this belief that you’re not already enlightened.<br />

WIZARD: All right!<br />

TRIP: Speaking of Ramana Maharshi, this is something the<br />

<strong>Wizard</strong> and I got in really big trouble <strong>with</strong> a friend of ours who’s<br />

the grand-nephew of Ramana Maharshi, his name is V. Ganesan.<br />

CHUCK HILLIG: Yes, I know of V. Ganesan, I’ve never met him.<br />

TRIP: Well we were up in the mountains and we got into some<br />

serious trouble up there.<br />

CHUCK HILLIG: What happened?<br />

TRIP: We said that basically there was no difference, in essence,<br />

between Ramana Maharshi or Hitler, or Pôl Pot and Christ. I<br />

mean, is there?<br />

CHUCK HILLIG: No. [Laughter] Well it’s like, remember, you<br />

read the book <strong>with</strong> the book and the hole in it – I said these<br />

wonderful people like Mother <strong>The</strong>resa and Mahatmas Gandhi,<br />
