cThe monastic town
Closely linked to the great abbey, the town of Cluny developed from 910 and,
like the abbey itself, was extremely prosperous during the Romanesque era. The
abbey attracted talented craftsmen, stone cutters and sculptors. The countryside
around Cluny is rich with soft, easy to work limestone quarries. These two factors,
combined with the wealth of the bourgeois of Cluny resulted, at the end of the
11 th century, in the building of a town in stone with richly decorated façades.

15 to August 31 for individuals and throughout the year for groups by
appointment (See page 35).

In partnership with the Association des Pupilles de l’Enseignement Public 71,
we propose a discovery rally which should delight young and old alike. A
series of questions will enable you to discover the heritage and architecture of
Cluny in a simple and amusing way.

Houses and their secrets
Led by a team of enthusiasts and the Centre d’Études Clunisiennes,
go off on a discovery tour of Cluny: gardens, façades, walls, streets,
town houses, staircases and shadows.

An unusual Sat Nav guided tour of the
medieval town on a touch screen tablet
with 3D views, Cluny Vision enables the
visitor to discover the medieval town of
Cluny through its extensive interactive
content. At each of the twelve points of
interest, diagrams, old engravings and
photos are use to illustrate one of the
three themes suggested to the visitor. But
that isn’t all! The result of research work
undertaken in Cluny over a period of
several years, virtual restorations of
the great church, now gone, enable
the user to get a grasp of the sheer scale of this building, which
was once the largest in Christendom.
With the interactive panoramic views, which the visitor
can view using the tablet like a window onto the past and
the 3D objects that represent the sculptures of Cluny available
at the touch of the fingertips, the new technology of
the CLUNY Vision application brings the past back to life.
