The abbey
Founded in 910, Cluny abbey radiated over Europe throughout the Middle Ages, with
its great abbey church of exceptional proportions: the “Maior Ecclesia”. Still today
the highest vaults in the Roman world bear witness to this search for gigantic size …
The restored remains of the immense abbey church and building spaces dating
from the 18 th century were highlighted in 2010, inviting visitors to rediscover
this unique place. A 3D film and virtual restorations complete the visit and
show the majesty of what was once the greatest church in Christendom.
The National Monuments Centre offers various visitor tours to discover the abbey
year round:
- unaccompanied tours (with visitor documents available in French, English, German,
Italian and Spanish),
- tours with commentary (every day, French),
- tours with audio-guide in 2013 (French, English, German Italian),
- tours made to measure for groups (conference tours, activities for school children:
tours or workshops, special tours…), special fixed rate, based on the number of
participants.

Jean de Bourbon Palace / museum
The Jean de Bourbon Palace houses the Museum of Art and Archaeology and is a rare
example of a flamboyant Gothic style manor house, with its vast reception rooms decorated
with monumental fireplaces. It is home to remarkable works of medieval sculpture
from Cluny, taken from the burg and the
abbey itself. Don’t miss the scale model of
part of the Great Portal of Cluny III (tympanum,
lintel, arches, jambs), a masterpiece of
Romanesque sculpture, and its accompanying
digital film. The old library holds some
rare prints, inherited from the Cluniac library.
From the Palace the visitor accesses the
belvedere square of the great abbey
church, the remains of its narthex, five
naves and the great abbey courtyard
between the Saint Hugues hostelry (11 th
century) and the Palace of Pope Gelasius
(entrance to the Monks’ enclosure).

April, May, June, September: 9.30am – 6pm.
July an August: 9.30am- 7pm.
October to March: 9.30am – 5pm.
Last admission 45 min before closing.
One ticket for both tours (valid 2 days).
Full price: 9,50 €; reduced price: 6,50 €.
Groups and tourism professionals (from 20 persons): 7,50 €.
school groups (visite libre) : 30 €.
Free under 18 years old (family and non-school groups) and 18-26 years old (from the European
Union and non-European residents regularly on the French territory).
