cThe Monk’s Chapel
The Monks’ Chapel dates from the 11 th
century. It was originally part of the Cluniac monastic
priory in Marcigny-en- Brionnais. In 1893
the chapel was classified as a Historic Monument.
The chapel is celebrated for its paintings,
considered to be the most beautiful example of
Cluniac Romanesque art, and which are very
probably the work of artists brought together by Saint Hugues during his journeys
to Mont-Cassin. The connection with the Byzantine art of Cappadocia is clear,
as is the connection with paintings in Roman sanctuaries of the same period.
The paintings here enable us to imagine the decoration, now long gone, used
in the Cluny III abbey church.
fun and cultural visit brings you back to Middle Ages, from
the vaulted cellars to the turrets of the tower. Take a stroll on
that reigned in the fifteenth century in the kitchen or the
bakery, put yourself in the shoes of a prisoner in the prisons or
a soldier in the room of weapons... Anecdotes and historical
information are revealed over the course of a self-guided
tour where fun and memorable activities are specially fitted
out for children (booklet-games, handling of a real chain
mail, sensory play ...).
Why not continue your tour with a visit to discover the wines of the estate, grown and matured
in our cellars by the estate owner. You can also get to the souvenir shop.
