c The great abbey church restored
The abbey
Founded in 910, Cluny abbey radiated over Europe throughout the Middle Ages, with
its great abbey church of exceptional proportions: the “Maior Ecclesia”. Still today
the highest vaults in the Roman world bear witness to this search for gigantic size …
The restored remains of the immense abbey church and building spaces dating
from the 18 th century were highlighted in 2010, inviting visitors to rediscover
this unique place. A 3D film and virtual restorations complete the visit and
show the majesty of what was once the greatest church in Christendom.
The National Monuments Centre offers various visitor tours to discover the abbey
year round:
- unaccompanied tours (with visitor documents available in French, English, German,
Italian and Spanish),
- tours with commentary (every day, French),
- tours with audio-guide in 2013 (French, English, German Italian),
- tours made to measure for groups (conference tours, activities for school children:
tours or workshops, special tours…), special fixed rate, based on the number of
participants.

Jean de Bourbon Palace / museum
The Jean de Bourbon Palace houses the Museum of Art and Archaeology and is a rare
example of a flamboyant Gothic style manor house, with its vast reception rooms decorated
with monumental fireplaces. It is home to remarkable works of medieval sculpture
from Cluny, taken from the burg and the
abbey itself. Don’t miss the scale model of
part of the Great Portal of Cluny III (tympanum,
lintel, arches, jambs), a masterpiece of
Romanesque sculpture, and its accompanying
digital film. The old library holds some
rare prints, inherited from the Cluniac library.
From the Palace the visitor accesses the
belvedere square of the great abbey
church, the remains of its narthex, five
naves and the great abbey courtyard
between the Saint Hugues hostelry (11 th
century) and the Palace of Pope Gelasius
(entrance to the Monks’ enclosure).

The Fromages Tower
VISIT AND DISCOVER CLUNY
This tower in the abbey walls, previously known as the Fèves
Tower, affords an extraordinary panorama over the abbey city.
At the top of the tower the visitor can use an augmented
reality show to rediscover the great abbey church.
There is also a photography exhibition
presenting the achievements of the

Parish churches
Notre-Dame’s church: Notre Dame Church is the
town’s main parish church in the heart of the town
centre. The urban power, often in disagreement with
that of the abbot, had set up its first town hall in this
square. The church is a fine
Gothic building, the porch
of which spread out onto the
square and was destroyed
just before the French Revolution.
Inside, the architectural
homogeneity is quite remarkable
and a beautiful light lights up this very stark building that
Pidou-Berlu watches over.
Saint Marcel’s Church is built on the site of the former Saint
Odon chapel, which dated from the end of the 11 th century.
The most remarkable part of the church is its Romanesque bell
tower: an octagonal tower topped with a long spire built in
the 16 th century.
The National Stud Farm
At the foot of the famous Abbey of Cluny, the National Stud
Farm was created in 1806, to meet the needs of Napoleon’s
army. Guided tours to discover this place and its occupants.
For children, interactive family visit based on a trail of the
senses. In the summer, two attractions offer a unique encounter
with the horses: Cluny Thursdays offering a presentation
of the horses, equestrian show....; and the equestrian cabarets, a dinner-show in the
prestigious setting of the Stud Farm.

cThe Hôtel-Dieu
Built at the beginning of the 15 th century by Cardinal
de Bouillon, Abbot of Cluny. Visit the chapel (fresco by
the artist Chaimowicz), the administrators’ room, the
apothecary’s store and the Saint-Lazare room with numerous
items testifying to the history of the establishment.
Free visit throughout the year of the chapel and of the Saint-Lazare room, outside the religious
offices. Projection and lighting of the showcases. Guided tours (except Sundays and bank
holidays) by appointment at least 48 hours in advance.

cThe monastic town
Closely linked to the great abbey, the town of Cluny developed from 910 and,
like the abbey itself, was extremely prosperous during the Romanesque era. The
abbey attracted talented craftsmen, stone cutters and sculptors. The countryside
around Cluny is rich with soft, easy to work limestone quarries. These two factors,
combined with the wealth of the bourgeois of Cluny resulted, at the end of the
11 th century, in the building of a town in stone with richly decorated façades.

with 3D views, Cluny Vision enables the
visitor to discover the medieval town of
Cluny through its extensive interactive
content. At each of the twelve points of
interest, diagrams, old engravings and
photos are use to illustrate one of the
three themes suggested to the visitor. But
that isn’t all! The result of research work
undertaken in Cluny over a period of
several years, virtual restorations of
the great church, now gone, enable
the user to get a grasp of the sheer scale of this building, which

Perched at an altitude of between 400 and
550 metres, this village, with its landscape of
copses and forests, is home to a 12 th century
Romanesque church, with a bell tower classified
as a “Historic Monument” as well as a former
sanatorium.
On this ancient Gallo-Roman site, in the 11th century the monks of Cluny
founded a priory which, although it was never a deanery, still played
an essential role in management of the land along the road from Cluny
to Brancion. Today the 11th century Saint Martin’s church and certain
elements of the priory (private) remain. On Mont Saint Romain (580m)
there is an orientation table with views across to the Alps and the Jura
Mountains and westwards to the Monts du Charolais and the Morvan).

Berzé-le-Châtel
This village is built around an extremely well
preserved imposing feudal castle. At the
junction between the Cluny region and the
Lamartinien Valley heading towards Mâcon,
Berzé le Châtel is located on a rocky peak that
dominates the Mâcon hills, with a fantastic
view over the rocks of Vergisson and Solutré.

Romanesque church (west: 12th c

columns and capitals at the entrance to the choir listed
on the additional Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1932.
Several buildings bear witness to the Cluniac heritage:
the Chapel of Saint-Jean du Bois (known at the Coureau
Chapel), which is an integral part of a deanery-hermitage
as well as the Malaise estate, an old rural priory which
was a dependency of Cluny Abbey.
A witness to 10 centuries of social and religious life, today the
church is known as Saint Denis, feast day 9th October. It was
very probably built in three stages from the beginning of the 11th century through to the start of the 13th . The bell tower and apse
in Romanesque style are the oldest sections, whereas the nave
with its pointed barrel vaulting is Gothic style. The 19th Wineries, self-catering cottages and bed and breakfast.

13th century and the 19th Chérizet is a small village to the north-west of Cluny
which covers an area of 3km

. Saint Martin’s Church
has lived through many eras, the transept under the
bell tower, the bell tower and the apse date from the
Romanesque era, and the nave was built between
1870 and 1873.

cCurtil-sous-Buffières
Curtil-sous-Buffières is built on the slope of a hill
set with copses and woods. Historical heritage
includes here a castle (private property, not
open for visits), a Romanesque church, a
washhouse, standing stones, old houses and a
well. The castle was lived in by Spanish monks.
In the old priory an inscription can still be seen
written in Spanish. According to tradition the
water in the courtyard healed fever, colds and
rheumatism.

Donzy-le-National
This village with its wooded, rolling landscape, boasts a
wealth of well preserved architectural heritage. Numerous
washhouses and crosses lie along the footpaths.
The church dates from the end of the Romanesque
period. The Ciné Pause cultural association organises
a number of cinema-based events, and notably a
high quality film festival. (July 31 to August 4, 2013
- www.cinepause.org).
Perched on a hill between Cluny, Cortambert and Azé, the village
opens onto a magnificent, tree-studded rolling landscape
where a multitude of dry stone walls still remain. The church dates
from the 11th Ancien moulin des murgers (3 km), balade en forêt (8 km), le Mont (8 km), Donzy-le-National
cdans sa diversité (17 km).
Donzy-le-Pertuis

washhouse is currently being restored and the tower is known as
the “Pavillon Tower”.
St Thibaut’s church, with its Romanesque bell tower with
Lombard bands, is built on two floors (12th century), the
nave and apse date from 1822. Flagy has five Tuscan
crosses. Sirot castle (private), a former manor house (13th century) has retained an imposing cylindrical tower from
the feudal period. Villard, Sirot and Flagy still have three

Jalogny
has two Romanesque churches: Saint
Valentin’s church in the burg (9th century, rebuilt
in the 12th century and modified several
times) and the Saint Jean-Baptiste chapel in
Vaux (12th 4 km southwest
century), both of which have been
recently restored.
cLa Vineuse
The church in La Vineuse, “Ecclesie Vinose”, is
mentioned in the 11th century and depended
on the chapter of Saint Vincent’s Cathedral
in Mâcon. With its massive bell tower dating
back to the beginning of the 12th century, it
dominates two valleys. Inside the church note
the base of the sculpted lamp (griffons) and
the 18th Bed and breakfast, self-catering cottages, local products.

Grosne, Lournand enjoys a particularly special environment,

the way out of the village, on the way towards Flagy.
In the old station room along the Voie Verte tables and
chairs are available for use, along with toilet facilities
and a water tap (reduced mobility access).
Massy village is set in the hollow of the valley
through which Le Clapier stream runs.
11th century church: pure early Romanesque style, it was
built between 1030-1040 by the Cluny monks to replace
the former St Martin’s chapel, (a few remains of which
are contained in the apse), which was given to the abbey
in 962. A menhir formerly located at the crossroads
of the ancients roads and now at the side of the D980 in the hamlet of Zublé would appear
to have been imported from the region of Mont St-Vincent and measures 2.45 metres. It
bears two types of inscriptions, some of which date from the post-Magdalenian period …
Two washhouses: one in the burg and one in the “Tour du blé” which belonged to the
former owners of the Cormatin Castle at the start of the 13th cMassy

by Cluny Abbey in 1409.
Mazille
Mazille is a small village on the flank of the hills above
the Grosne Valley. Mazille contains Saint Blaise church
which was erected at the beginning of the 12th century, a Cluniac site and classified as a Historic
Monument. The former Monks’ Deanery (now private)
is a Cluniac site and is on the list of Historic Monuments;
it is a massive building comprising a chapel and an
infirmary dating from the end of the 13th century, a
building used for housing and outbuildings dating from
the 14th and 15th centuries, all overlooking the village.
The Carmel de la Paix is a work by Jose-Luis Sert and is certified as 20th Self-catering cottage, local products.

of Pressy-sous-Dondin marks a transition
between Charolais and Cluny country, with
the small Gande Valley marking the border.
Although Cluniac architecture remains
omnipresent, with its gallery houses and
square dovecote, yellow stone has disappeared
to be replaced by grey granite.
The main monuments to see in Pressy are Dondin Castle, Marchizeuil Castle, Pressy
Castle, the castle metal store, the old chapel, the Henrys estate, the church, Notre
Dame de bon secours chapel, the windmill and the washhouses.

The landscape of this village is influenced by
the copse-covered hills so characteristic of the
Charolais region. Four well-marked footpaths
(forest route, water route, village discovery and
around the village) can be taken to discover the
various local curiosities, that is the washhouses
(notably the one in Gros-Chigy with its strange
fountain covered and crowned with a 4 sided
pyramid like the top of an obelisk), Gros Chigy
Castle (private) and the 11 th century Romanesque church, which is a classified
historic monument.

Formerly a wine-growers village, Saint-Vincent des Prés is

Romanesque church (probably built between 1030 and
1063 after the design of Cluny II.) is classified as a historic
monument. The Bézornay deanery appears in a charter
dated 909. The estate was built up mainly between 980
and 1010. Bézornay retains a fragmented, irregular high
wall, connected to a tower with a gate and the traces
of a drawbridge.

pilgrims on the way of Saint James (Santiago de Compostella).

Salornay-sur-Guye 12 km northwest
Salornay is located at the confluence of two rivers, the
Gande and the Guye. The village’s history is deeply marked
by the existence of these two rivers so it’s no surprise to find,
built over time, six washhouses, five bridges, including Saint
Catherine’s Bridge and the Grand Pont which date from
medieval times and the remains of water mills, including the
La Clochette water mill (exhibition room where, in the summer).
Also of interest: the church with its bell tower and apse from the Romanesque period.

(inscribed on the Inventory of Historic Monuments)
which has recently been renovated. In 2005 the first prize
in the Departmental Heritage competition in the category
«restoration of works and objects of art» was awarded to Vitry-lès-Cluny for its retable. Not far
from the church is an ancient feudal castle built on a rocky spur (private property).

The Azé cave
The Azé cave site has been listed since 1933. The Prehistoric Cave (Azé 1), also
known as Grotte de La Balme, opens in the heart of a venerable and monumental
cedar forest planted around 1860 on the chalky slopes of Rochebin.
From 300 000 years to perhaps 40 000 years, period from which the cave was
com- pletely filled in, men and wild beasts shared this place. the cave offers
a display of the largest visible collection of cave bear skeletons, in their actual
setting. Not far from there is the underground river cave.
You will follow its trace through the 3 levels it occupied to
the present day resurgence. Behind the waterfall that marks
the far end of the visit today is the opening to a whole territory,
the largest part of which still remains to be explored.

Vine and Wine Museum
Château de la Greffière is a wine estate located in La
Roche-Vineuse in the Mâcon region. Its Vine and Wine Museum
includes an extensive collection of items presented in
a building built over four centuries ago. Displays of art and
old-time wine grower’s tools are on show, as well as other tools
and know-how: everyday life, barrel-maker’s, carpenter’s and
blacksmith’s tools. Wine tasting of the estate’s wine provides
a friendly, relaxed time during the visit. For groups, which must
be booked in advance, there is the possibility of creating a
tour including the museum, wine cellars, tasting and a buffet.

cThe Monk’s Chapel
The Monks’ Chapel dates from the 11 th
century. It was originally part of the Cluniac monastic
priory in Marcigny-en- Brionnais. In 1893
the chapel was classified as a Historic Monument.
The chapel is celebrated for its paintings,
considered to be the most beautiful example of
Cluniac Romanesque art, and which are very
probably the work of artists brought together by Saint Hugues during his journeys
to Mont-Cassin. The connection with the Byzantine art of Cappadocia is clear,
as is the connection with paintings in Roman sanctuaries of the same period.
The paintings here enable us to imagine the decoration, now long gone, used
in the Cluny III abbey church.

Defending Cluny Abbey, Berzé is the
largest fortress in southern Burgundy with
its thirteen towers built between the 11 th
and 14 th centuries. Considered impre-
gnable under Louis XI, it includes some ingenious defensive
systems within its three enclosures. Built before the castle, a
Carolingian chapel is hidden away in the terraced gardens that
offer an exceptional view over the site of Solutré.
From Easter weekend (30 th March) to 31 st September open daily, except Thursday (except

The
Perched on a rocky spur, Brancion welcomes
you to discover the Middle Ages you dream of:
a castle built by the Lords of Brancion between

The castle of Saint Point was built during the 12th Alphonse de Lamartine
century and, like other castles in
the area, it was used to defend Cluny Abbey; it evolved over the centuries. In 1789,
the villagers ransacked it. In 1801 Pierre de Lamartine, the poet’s father bought it at
an auction together with a hundred or so hectares of land, to extend and live off
his landed estate.Alphonse de Lamartine was only 11 years
old, and would often come here with his parents and sisters.

Castle of Saint Point
Alphonse de Lamartine was to come here several months
each year, until his death in Paris in 1869. He is buried in a
tomb situated at the far end of the park in the small chapel
he had had built to bury his mother in 1829. The visit of
the interior allows visitors to see ornaments, paintings and
furniture that have remained there since his death and all
his literary and political works.

Saint Cyr offers a superb panorama over the
Charolais copses, to the north over the Morvan hills

Arborétum of Pézanin
Set in beautiful parkland, covering a total area
of 27 hectares, Pézanin has a wealth of some 450
species or varieties of trees from all over the world. In the pond, abundant in carp
and pike, fishing is permit- ted for holders of a day permit. A picnic area is organised
in a huge meadow, with tables, benches and barbecues.

Natura 2000. Natura 2000 is a biodiversity management tool, the aim of which is
not to put nature in a greenhouse but rather to conserve or improve agricultural
and forestry methods that are favourable to the fauna and flora of community

The Abbey Park
Created in the mid 14th century, the park has undergone many
changes over the centuries. Today it contains 24 different
deciduous species and 10 evergreen species. Free entry all
year round.
A play area is available for children aged 3 to 6, under
adult supervision. Access to the park isstrictly forbidden to all
motorised vehicles. Dogs must be kept on a lead.
The Simples garden
Overlooking the narthex, the «Simples» garden, of medieval
inspiration, contains around a hundred varieties of plants
with healing properties and aromatic species.
Fishing Holiday permit (30 €): Valid for 15 consecutive
days, during the period from 1st June to 31 December, the
holiday permit allows all kinds of fishing in the 1st category
(1 line max.) and in 2nd category (4 lines max).
