Other important exhibitions produced by the
department and accompanied by fully illustrated
catalogues were Salvatore Zofrea Appassionata Woodcuts,
sponsored by Deutsche Bank with a national tour
organised by New England Regional Art Museum, and
This vital flesh: the sculpture of Rayner Hoff and his
school. Hoff was a leading sculptor during the Art Deco
period in Sydney, where his most famous public commission
is the sculpture for the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park.
The extremely well received Australian Collection Focus
Series continued with sponsorship from ABN-AMRO
Rothschild. They comprised Grace Cossington-Smith: The
Lacquer Room 1935-36, George Baldessin: Occasional
Images from a City Chamber 1975 and Les Sauvages de
la Mer Pacifique, a collaborative venture with the National
Gallery of Australia.
The Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prize exhibitions
continued to be sponsored by Colonial Bank. Betty
Churcher, former director of the NGA, was judge of the
Dobell Prize for Drawing, sponsored by the Sir William
Dobell Foundation.
A series of exhibitions at the Brett Whiteley Studio,
organised with help from Wendy Whiteley, included Whiteley
in Paris, Brett Whiteley Nudes and Whiteley in Words.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art
Yiribana Gallery continued its exhibition from the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collection, a material
thing. Michael Riley’s photographic portraits Yarns from
the Talbragar Reserve were exhibited for NAIDOC Week.
Raiki Wara: Long cloth from Aboriginal Australia and the
Torres Strait gave a significant insight into a relatively
new medium in indigenous art practice. Two more
exhibitions from the Yiribana collection were curated
primarily by media - Another Country: works on paper
and photography from the collection, and Ochre: bark
paintings from the collection.
Asian Art
Two major exhibitions of Asian art commenced in
the previous financial year, both running until August
1999. They were Treasures of Asian Art: Selections from
the Mr & Mrs John D Rockefeller 3rd Collection of the
Asia Society and Indonesian Gold: Treasures from the
National Museum, Jakarta.
Fragrant Space: Chinese bird and flower painting of
the Ming and Qing dynasties drew upon an important
collection of paintings from the Guangdong Provincial
