Amongst the recently<br />
signed contracts is one for collecting<br />
<strong>and</strong> refining natural gas<br />
inten<strong>de</strong>d to supply electric power<br />
stations so as to cure the region’s<br />
problem of frequent power cuts.<br />
In a communiqué dated 7 November,<br />
the Kurdish Minister of Natural<br />
Resources, Dr Ashti Hawrami,<br />
announced that the Kurdish Government<br />
had signed “seven new oil<br />
production sharing contracts”. Seven<br />
blocks, spread out between Irbil<br />
<strong>and</strong> Dohuk Provinces, have been<br />
allocated to the following companies:<br />
OMV Aktiengessellschaft,<br />
MOL Hungarian Oil <strong>and</strong> Gas PLC,<br />
Gulf Keystone Petroleum International<br />
Limited, Kalegran Limited<br />
<strong>and</strong> Reliance Energy Ltd or to their<br />
subsidiaries. “With these new contracts<br />
there are about twenty international<br />
oil companies that will now be<br />
operating in Iraqi Kurdistan”,<br />
<strong>de</strong>clared Dr. Hawrami with pleasure.<br />
These companies will receive<br />
15% of the income from the oil production<br />
<strong>and</strong> “85% will go to Iraq”.
