Dr. Halabi on Cancer<br />

At 12 noon on Friday, 4th March, 2011, Dr. Naim Salem gave a talk<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Conference Room about Political Change <strong>in</strong> the Arab World.<br />

He discussed the way the Arabs are struggl<strong>in</strong>g to end the era of<br />

dictatorship because of their yearn<strong>in</strong>g for a new time of democracy.<br />

In po<strong>in</strong>t of fact, with the Internet era and the rapidity of <strong>in</strong>formation,<br />

people can no longer be considered as a helpless mass and their op<strong>in</strong>ion<br />

must be taken <strong>in</strong>to consideration. With all the recent unrest, any of<br />

several forms of government may come <strong>in</strong>to be<strong>in</strong>g, depend<strong>in</strong>g on the<br />

will of the people.<br />

To mark both the Feast of the Annunciation and Mother’s Day, on Thursday, 24th March, 2011, the Dr.<br />

Nidaa Abou Marad Group came to North Lebanon Campus to present staff, faculty members, students, their<br />

families and guests with a recital of Sufi religious music, deeply mov<strong>in</strong>g for both Christians and Muslims <strong>in</strong><br />

the audience. The special guests <strong>in</strong>cluded His Lordship Bishop <strong>Georges</strong> Abou Jaoudeh, a representative of the<br />

Right Honorable Robert Fadel MP, and Mr. Anto<strong>in</strong>e Menassa, Vice President of the World Lebanese Cultural<br />

Union (WLCU) represent<strong>in</strong>g Mr. Eid Shedrawi.<br />

The Health & Fitness Society at NDU-NLC <strong>in</strong>vited Dr. Jamil Halabi (Secretary General-Lebanese Cancer Society)<br />

to deliver a speech on Recent Cancer Trends <strong>in</strong> Lebanon, on Wednesday, April 18, 2011. A large number of<br />

students, staff and faculty attended the sem<strong>in</strong>ar.<br />

Dr. Maz<strong>in</strong> Moufarij (Speech Moderator) welcomed Dr. Halabi and gave a brief <strong>in</strong>troduction on cancer risks,<br />

dangers, challenges and advances <strong>in</strong> treatment.<br />

Dr. Halabi presented for the first time cancer epidemology <strong>in</strong> Lebanon and the ways we can prevent twothirds<br />

of the cancers. Dr Halabi emphasized that one-third of all cancers are food-related.<br />

Brochures on cancer awareness prepared by the Lebanese Cancer Society were distributed to all the audience.<br />
