NDU w<strong>in</strong>s at ASME<br />
For the third time, the American Society of Mechanical<br />
Eng<strong>in</strong>eers (ASME) organized its Student Professional<br />
Development Conference (SPDC) for the ASME District J<br />
(Middle East & Africa) <strong>in</strong> Lebanon. This year's SPDC was<br />
organized at the American University of Beirut (AUB)<br />
on April 29-30, 2011 (after the first two SPDCs which<br />
were organized at NDU <strong>in</strong> 2010 and 2009). An SPDC<br />
usually <strong>in</strong>cludes professional development sem<strong>in</strong>ars for<br />
students as well as student competitions open to all<br />
ASME student members <strong>in</strong> the district.<br />
The participat<strong>in</strong>g universities this year were Notre<br />
Dame University, American University of Beirut,<br />
Lebanese American University, Beirut Arab University,<br />
Khalifa University (UAE), K<strong>in</strong>g Fahd University of<br />
Petroleum and M<strong>in</strong>erals (KSA), Pits Bilani University<br />
(UAE), and American University of Cairo (Egypt).<br />
Fifteen teams were <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the major event of the<br />
conference or the Student Design Competition and the<br />
results came out as follows:<br />

The first team won $500 and a travel allowance to<br />
compete aga<strong>in</strong>st similar w<strong>in</strong>ners from all ASME Districts<br />
around the world. The f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>ternational competition<br />
will take place on November 2011 <strong>in</strong> Denver<br />
Colorado dur<strong>in</strong>g the IMECE (International Mechanical<br />
Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Congress and Exposition).<br />
Furthermore, NDU student Joseph Tayoun<br />
(ID#20071294) won the third place <strong>in</strong> the Old Guard<br />
Oral Presentation competition, another competition<br />
<strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the same event.
