Policy<br />

Three main areas <strong>of</strong> infection control that need to be addressed by state and local public<br />

healthcare agencies are TB control in<br />

1. healthcare facilities, where persons with infectious TB disease would seek care; 3,4<br />

2. congregate settings and residential facilities, whose residents are at increased risk<br />

for TB disease; 5,6<br />

3. the patient’s home.<br />

To accomplish TB control activities, each local public healthcare agency should do the<br />

following:<br />

1. Familiarize staff with the current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<br />

infection control guidelines for healthcare providers and settings.<br />

2. Develop an infection control program for the county or state TB staff, focusing on<br />

a. assignment <strong>of</strong> responsibility for program;<br />

b. risk assessment;<br />

c. persons (if anyone) who need baseline testing, including TB screening and<br />

counseling;<br />

d. education and training;<br />

e. case management (if direct patient care is provided).<br />

3. Designate a staff person to guide facilities that may need to set up TB infection<br />

control programs.<br />
