The transformation <strong>of</strong> biomedic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>to Christian medic<strong>in</strong>e fortified <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> medical<br />

missionaries. Their strategy <strong>of</strong> moral sanitation, manipulation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vention <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> African <strong>in</strong>dividual, are <strong>the</strong> pillars <strong>of</strong> missionary medic<strong>in</strong>e's power regime that aimed at<br />

establish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>spirit</strong>ual <strong>and</strong> physical transformation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> African patient. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>the</strong><br />

many forms <strong>of</strong> social <strong>and</strong> religious control exercised by medical practitioners largely def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />

discourse on missionary medic<strong>in</strong>e. The ever present aspect <strong>of</strong> manipulation <strong>of</strong> African patients<br />

by medical missionaries had a pr<strong>of</strong>ound <strong>in</strong>fluence on <strong>the</strong> way missionary medic<strong>in</strong>e was<br />

perceived <strong>and</strong> evaluated at a later stage.<br />

Over <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> time, after <strong>the</strong> era <strong>of</strong> colonization, <strong>the</strong> stereotype <strong>of</strong> European biomedic<strong>in</strong>e’s<br />

superiority over African <strong>in</strong>digenous <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> systems became <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> discussion <strong>and</strong> debate<br />

about <strong>the</strong> relation between Western <strong>and</strong> African approaches to health, illness <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. In <strong>the</strong><br />

process <strong>of</strong> re-assess<strong>in</strong>g missionary medic<strong>in</strong>e, Christian medic<strong>in</strong>e was stripped <strong>of</strong> its assumed<br />

superiority, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stead it was assigned a place among o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> systems <strong>in</strong> Africa on <strong>the</strong><br />

basis <strong>of</strong> its be<strong>in</strong>g different from <strong>in</strong>digenous <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> systems. Its <strong>in</strong>fluence thus did not depend on<br />

supremacy but on <strong>the</strong> potential to establish various k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> transformation.<br />

The various dimensions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> missionary medic<strong>in</strong>e discourse itself all po<strong>in</strong>t towards <strong>the</strong> notion<br />

<strong>of</strong> transformation as a crucial component <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> discourse. Without <strong>the</strong> cluster <strong>of</strong> evangelism,<br />

salvation <strong>and</strong> transformation, <strong>the</strong> whole discourse as such would not have existed. Its <strong>in</strong>ception<br />

history, <strong>the</strong> core features <strong>of</strong> Christian medic<strong>in</strong>e (as biomedic<strong>in</strong>e imbued with Christian notions<br />

that have to do with reach<strong>in</strong>g out to Africans <strong>and</strong> aim<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>spirit</strong>ual <strong>and</strong> social transformation),<br />

<strong>the</strong> praxis — every dimension <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> discourse po<strong>in</strong>ts towards <strong>the</strong> ultimate goal <strong>of</strong> transform<strong>in</strong>g<br />

people through <strong>the</strong> gospel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great Physician.<br />
