concrete <strong>and</strong> material ways; we f<strong>in</strong>d our health <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> web <strong>of</strong> relations with God,<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r human be<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> environment. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, through <strong>the</strong> focus on <strong>the</strong> Spirit, any<br />
<strong>the</strong>ological reflection on human health refers to God’s life.<br />
New articulations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k between Spirit <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> can thus be developed on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong><br />
relationality. In <strong>the</strong> African health discourse, relationships are synonymous with health <strong>and</strong> wellbe<strong>in</strong>g;<br />
<strong>in</strong> Reformed pneumatological discourse, <strong>the</strong>re is a close l<strong>in</strong>k between <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>and</strong><br />
relationships (union with Christ, communion <strong>of</strong> believers), but <strong>the</strong>re is no direct connection<br />
between relationships <strong>and</strong> health. However, new articulations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k between Spirit <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> can be developed when <strong>the</strong> identification <strong>of</strong> relationships <strong>and</strong> health <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Spirit is emphasized: <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit places humans <strong>in</strong> relationship with God <strong>and</strong> with one<br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> thus <strong>the</strong> Spirit gives life, <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g. The existence <strong>of</strong> relationships <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> restoration <strong>of</strong> bonds can be seen as <strong>the</strong> efficacies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit, who aims at <strong>the</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />
creation. When one is brought <strong>in</strong>to relationships that produce vitality, forgiveness <strong>and</strong> restoration<br />
<strong>of</strong> one’s identity, <strong>the</strong>n that can be identified as <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. It is <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit.<br />
Fragment 2 Spirit <strong>and</strong> transformation<br />
The notion <strong>of</strong> transformation (a key motif <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> missionary medic<strong>in</strong>e discourse) draws <strong>the</strong><br />
attention to <strong>the</strong> complex nature <strong>of</strong> transformation. In <strong>the</strong> missionary medic<strong>in</strong>e discourse,<br />
transformation was located at <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tersection <strong>of</strong> materiality <strong>and</strong> <strong>spirit</strong>uality, which was displayed<br />
by <strong>the</strong> close connection between <strong>the</strong> conversion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soul <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body. The<br />
missionary underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> transformation draws <strong>the</strong> attention to <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> transformation<br />
<strong>in</strong> relation to God <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. The complex nature <strong>of</strong> transformation <strong>in</strong> Reformed pneumatology<br />
is rooted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>spirit</strong>ual union with Christ (forensic underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> salvation) <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
metaphorical language <strong>of</strong> transformation. The metaphor <strong>of</strong> adoption is familiar <strong>in</strong> Reformed<br />
pneumatological thought, <strong>and</strong> a focus on <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> adoption with her disruptive work <strong>and</strong> her<br />
counter-cultural charismata allows for an underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> as transformation that<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes both body <strong>and</strong> soul. The Spirit <strong>of</strong> God draws humans <strong>in</strong>to processes <strong>of</strong> transformation<br />
which aim at <strong>the</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> justice, mercy <strong>and</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> this reality. It means<br />
that <strong>the</strong> transform<strong>in</strong>g work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit does not only cause change <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>spirit</strong>ual life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
believer, but also that <strong>the</strong> Spirit claims any dimension <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> believer’s life. Be<strong>in</strong>g drawn <strong>in</strong>to<br />
union with Christ through <strong>the</strong> Spirit thus means that body, soul, relationships, family,<br />
environment, occupation <strong>and</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r part <strong>of</strong> human life are placed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> realm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
disorient<strong>in</strong>g Spirit. The Spirit <strong>of</strong> God works <strong>in</strong> countercultural <strong>and</strong> disorient<strong>in</strong>g ways <strong>in</strong> order to<br />
re-orient concrete life accord<strong>in</strong>g to God’s love <strong>and</strong> justice. This k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> all-embrac<strong>in</strong>g<br />
