The journey consists <strong>of</strong> two ma<strong>in</strong> stages. The first stage is a necessary step <strong>in</strong> order to ga<strong>in</strong> an<br />

underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> phenomenon <strong>of</strong> health. What do we mean when we talk about health, or<br />

when we search for <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>? How is health perceived <strong>in</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Africa? The second stage is<br />

<strong>the</strong> engagement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first stage with Reformed pneumatological discourse <strong>in</strong><br />

order to f<strong>in</strong>d out whe<strong>the</strong>r productive avenues can be opened for Reformed <strong>the</strong>ology <strong>in</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Africa.<br />

Constituents <strong>of</strong> health<br />

One important pillar <strong>of</strong> this research is <strong>the</strong> assumption that health is a multi-dimensional concept.<br />

The def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>of</strong> health is determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>in</strong>ternal rules <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions that are mean<strong>in</strong>gful to a<br />

particular group <strong>in</strong> society. This means that how one perceives health is <strong>in</strong>fluenced by factors<br />

like one’s experiences, tradition, gender, age, <strong>in</strong>come <strong>and</strong> religion. Thus, one’s underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

health never develops <strong>in</strong> a vacuum, but is actually created by one’s social frame <strong>of</strong> reference.<br />

Health is a social construct, developed with<strong>in</strong> particular frames <strong>of</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g. This <strong>in</strong>sight<br />

provides <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> this <strong>the</strong>ological research on health <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, because it implies an open<br />

underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> health. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>the</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> health as a social construct requires<br />

a basic sensitivity towards <strong>the</strong> open, non-exclusivist nature <strong>of</strong> health, which implies that <strong>the</strong><br />

mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> health is always rooted <strong>in</strong> contextuality, subjectivity, discursive structures <strong>in</strong> society,<br />

globalization processes, hybridity <strong>of</strong> health ideas, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> need for people to make sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

situation. These elements are <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g blocks <strong>of</strong> any construction <strong>of</strong> health; <strong>the</strong>y constitute<br />

health.<br />

An open underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> health will allow church <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ology to be cont<strong>in</strong>uously <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> articulat<strong>in</strong>g new <strong>in</strong>terpretations <strong>of</strong> human illness, suffer<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> health. If<br />

<strong>the</strong>ological reflection considers <strong>the</strong> fact that health ideas are always constructed <strong>in</strong> a particular<br />

context on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> specific, subjective, hybrid, <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>and</strong> collective experiences <strong>and</strong><br />

beliefs, <strong>the</strong>n it means that health need not to be understood only <strong>in</strong> biomedical terms <strong>of</strong><br />

physicality, absence <strong>of</strong> disease <strong>and</strong> objectivity. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g health as a social construct<br />

automatically entails a broaden<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field for <strong>the</strong>ological reflection on health, illness <strong>and</strong><br />

suffer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Health discourses<br />

Perceiv<strong>in</strong>g health as a social construct thus has a major implication for <strong>the</strong>ological reflection. It<br />

means that health is no longer def<strong>in</strong>ed by one health discourse, namely <strong>the</strong> scientific biomedical<br />

discourse, but by multiple <strong>and</strong> different health discourses. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, church <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ology<br />

do not only need to relate to <strong>the</strong> biomedical underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> health, but also to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
