CHAPTER 10. THE SPIRIT AND POWER<br />

This chapter is an exploration <strong>in</strong>to Reformed articulations on <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> African context. It<br />

follows <strong>the</strong> same methodological approach as <strong>the</strong> previous chapters <strong>in</strong> Part II <strong>of</strong> this <strong>the</strong>sis: <strong>the</strong><br />

presupposition be<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> engagement <strong>of</strong> health discourses, with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> Africa, with<br />

Reformed <strong>the</strong>ology will be fruitful <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> exploration <strong>of</strong> Reformed pneumatological articulations<br />

on God <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. More explicitly, this chapter centralizes <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> power as a key to<br />

unlock<strong>in</strong>g Reformed pneumatological th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. The notion <strong>of</strong> power as a key is<br />

derived from <strong>the</strong> church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse (as described <strong>in</strong> Chapter 5). At <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> chapter, <strong>the</strong> central position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> motif <strong>of</strong> power <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse will<br />

be recaptured briefly, <strong>and</strong> subsequently <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> power for Reformed<br />

thought about <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> will be explored from a pneumatological perspective.<br />

10.1 POWER AND THEOLOGICAL DISCOURSE<br />

On <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse (see Chapter 5), it became<br />

clear that <strong>the</strong> motif <strong>of</strong> power plays an important role <strong>in</strong> how health is perceived with<strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong><br />

circles <strong>of</strong> faith communities. Essentially, everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse is<br />

focused on, <strong>and</strong> nurtured by, <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> power. Power is understood here to belong to <strong>the</strong><br />

frame <strong>of</strong> relationships: it is an unend<strong>in</strong>g series <strong>of</strong> maneuvers that constitute one’s existence <strong>and</strong><br />

well-be<strong>in</strong>g. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, power equals health. The def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>of</strong> power <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-based<br />

<strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse is that power is derived from power, which means that liv<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>gs receive<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir power to exist from ano<strong>the</strong>r source: that is, God. God’s power, that can be experienced<br />

through <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, is essential for human life <strong>and</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g. In <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>istries, <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> power has become so important that it functions as a parameter <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>spirit</strong>ual <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong>terventions: without <strong>the</strong> reliance on God’s power to <strong>in</strong>tervene <strong>and</strong> heal,<br />

church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istries would be mean<strong>in</strong>gless. Ano<strong>the</strong>r reason for <strong>the</strong> centraliz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

notion <strong>of</strong> power <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse, is that it refers to <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>and</strong><br />

collective transformation. The power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit can lead to religious, social, economic,<br />

political <strong>and</strong> ecclesiological forms <strong>of</strong> transformation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sense that <strong>the</strong> call upon <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>in</strong>augurates a shift with<strong>in</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g situations <strong>and</strong> relations <strong>of</strong> suppress<strong>in</strong>g power. The<br />

power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit br<strong>in</strong>gs liberation <strong>and</strong> transformation.<br />

The relevance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> power for <strong>the</strong> church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse suggests that it<br />

could be worthwhile to explore <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> power on Reformed pneumatological<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. The description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse shows that power<br />
