considered a tentative condition <strong>in</strong> our redemption; <strong>in</strong>stead, it is def<strong>in</strong>ite <strong>and</strong> to be experienced<br />
directly, despite <strong>the</strong> fact that diseases are still present <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new order <strong>of</strong> resurrection existence.<br />
Reformed thought on transformation has room for a holistic underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
With<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> boundaries <strong>of</strong> metaphorical language, <strong>the</strong>re is an openness to <strong>the</strong> aspect <strong>of</strong><br />
physicality, mean<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> body can change <strong>and</strong> become healed under <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong><br />
experienc<strong>in</strong>g God’s grace, but not <strong>in</strong> a direct way. It is through <strong>the</strong> change <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> believer’s<br />
identity that his or her perspective changes, lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> transformation <strong>of</strong> various aspects <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> believer’s existence, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> restoration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body, soul <strong>and</strong> <strong>spirit</strong>.<br />
Transformation as a union with Christ emphasizes <strong>the</strong> relational underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> salvation <strong>and</strong><br />
wholeness, <strong>and</strong> it draws attention to <strong>the</strong> person <strong>and</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. The most prom<strong>in</strong>ent<br />
metaphor applied to <strong>the</strong> redemptive work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit is adoption: <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> adoption is <strong>the</strong><br />
One who transforms <strong>the</strong> believer <strong>in</strong>to a son or a daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> who enables <strong>the</strong><br />
believer to participate <strong>in</strong> God’s plan <strong>of</strong> salvation for all <strong>of</strong> creation. This transformation is a<br />
process <strong>of</strong> change, that beg<strong>in</strong>s with <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> believer, <strong>and</strong> ends<br />
with <strong>the</strong> ultimate mend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> creation. The transform<strong>in</strong>g work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> adoption <strong>in</strong>volves<br />
<strong>the</strong> whole person (<strong>spirit</strong>, soul <strong>and</strong> body) <strong>and</strong> all <strong>of</strong> creation. The transformation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> believer is<br />
a process, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al adoption is still underway <strong>and</strong> awaited <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> groan<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Spirit.<br />
The metaphor <strong>of</strong> adoption implies that <strong>the</strong> transformed believer lives <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tension <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit.<br />
When a person approaches God as <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r, it means that every dimension <strong>of</strong> his or her life is<br />
reclaimed for this Fa<strong>the</strong>r. Adoption is never partial. Yet it is still <strong>in</strong> process. With <strong>the</strong> adoption,<br />
<strong>the</strong> union with Christ through <strong>the</strong> Spirit, <strong>the</strong> believer is <strong>in</strong>troduced to a different k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> order<br />
that also affects our ideas about <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> restoration. When <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> is framed by <strong>the</strong> tension<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit, <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> can be perceived as <strong>the</strong> order that is found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cross <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> resurrection<br />
<strong>of</strong> Christ. Articulat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> as transformation, as liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tension created by <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong><br />
adoption, means that <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> is shaped by <strong>the</strong> pattern <strong>of</strong> Christ: <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> is about frailty, hope <strong>and</strong><br />
service to o<strong>the</strong>rs. This disoriented way <strong>of</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> is also to be found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> countercultural<br />
gifts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit. By enabl<strong>in</strong>g people to rema<strong>in</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tension <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘already’ <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> ‘not-yet’, <strong>the</strong> Spirit causes upheaval <strong>in</strong> many ways, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> way we deal with <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>.<br />
She br<strong>in</strong>gs to m<strong>in</strong>d that <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> has a shadow side, because <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> through <strong>the</strong> Spirit draws one<br />
away from oneself, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>to God’s plan <strong>of</strong> salvation. Thus, <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> through <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> adoption<br />
is disorient<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> counter-cultural, because it <strong>in</strong>volves an existential shift <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong><br />
gravity: <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual believer is no longer <strong>the</strong> centerpiece <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, but <strong>the</strong> triune God who is<br />
