<strong>the</strong> breath <strong>of</strong> life, are endowed with <strong>the</strong> capacity to be restored, to experience <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> shalom<br />
(Ezekiel 37:1-14). When <strong>the</strong> Spirit gives life, it is always God-related life, with aspects <strong>of</strong><br />
wholeness, abundance, peace, well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> health. The Spirit, thus, creates <strong>and</strong> upholds <strong>the</strong><br />
existential well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> promise <strong>of</strong> renewal <strong>of</strong> life, because She is <strong>the</strong> One who fosters lifegiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
relationships.<br />
Articulat<strong>in</strong>g a l<strong>in</strong>k between God <strong>and</strong> health, thus, has to do with <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit, who<br />
allows God’s breath <strong>of</strong> life to be shared with human be<strong>in</strong>gs. One could say that any statement<br />
about God <strong>and</strong> health starts with <strong>the</strong> person <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit, who opens God’s relationality so that<br />
creation can participate <strong>in</strong> God’s shalom, wholeness <strong>and</strong> health. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, any reference to<br />
health <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> human life can be understood as an implied reference to <strong>the</strong> Triune God,<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce we f<strong>in</strong>d our well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> web <strong>of</strong> relations with God, with o<strong>the</strong>r human<br />
be<strong>in</strong>gs, with our environment, with everyth<strong>in</strong>g that is with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> horizon <strong>of</strong> God’s relational life.<br />
The l<strong>in</strong>k between <strong>the</strong> life-giv<strong>in</strong>g Spirit <strong>and</strong> human existence is relationality, <strong>and</strong> actually<br />
parallels <strong>the</strong> African perception <strong>of</strong> health <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sense that <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> requires a cont<strong>in</strong>uous search<br />
for balance, a cont<strong>in</strong>uous process <strong>of</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> illness that has distorted <strong>the</strong> social tissue <strong>of</strong><br />
health. The self-giv<strong>in</strong>g love <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> kenotic love <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Son, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> bond<strong>in</strong>g love <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Spirit provide <strong>the</strong> basis for underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g what human well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> health is supposed to<br />
be.<br />
In that sense it is plausible to say that this perspective on Tr<strong>in</strong>itarian social life embraces a<br />
possibility that is not yet fully explored <strong>in</strong> Reformed <strong>the</strong>ology: if <strong>the</strong> Spirit can be identified as<br />
<strong>the</strong> bond <strong>of</strong> love who opens God’s life towards creation through life-giv<strong>in</strong>g bonds, <strong>the</strong>n it<br />
becomes possible to speak <strong>of</strong> wholeness, health <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> as relationality <strong>in</strong> creaturely life. In<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r words, underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> health as embedded <strong>in</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>itarian relational life<br />
presents a new perspective on <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k between Spirit <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>.<br />
Locat<strong>in</strong>g health <strong>and</strong> wholeness <strong>in</strong> God’s relational life implies that health <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> are<br />
soteriological categories <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sense that one’s wholeness is established by God’s<br />
communication <strong>of</strong> wholeness. The Scriptures witness <strong>the</strong> Spirit as <strong>the</strong> One who is always<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g life-giv<strong>in</strong>g bonds, <strong>and</strong> thus <strong>in</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>g creation <strong>in</strong>to wholeness <strong>and</strong> wellbe<strong>in</strong>g<br />
(salvation) provided by God. Health, <strong>the</strong>n, is not someth<strong>in</strong>g that has its orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> creation<br />
itself. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, health <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> are embedded <strong>in</strong> God’s relational life, <strong>and</strong> can be experienced<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> life-giv<strong>in</strong>g bonds <strong>of</strong> human life. In this light, <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> borders <strong>in</strong> African <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> (as<br />
described <strong>in</strong> Chapter 2, section 4) could be fur<strong>the</strong>r explored <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accessibility <strong>of</strong><br />
health <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> for human be<strong>in</strong>gs. In <strong>the</strong> discourse <strong>of</strong> African traditional <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, borders<br />
