mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> association <strong>of</strong> Word <strong>and</strong> Spirit is about <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>spiration <strong>of</strong> Scripture: God Himself<br />
speaks through his Word. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>the</strong> Spirit is never to be separated from <strong>the</strong> Word, but<br />
She au<strong>the</strong>nticates <strong>the</strong> knowledge about God that is provided <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bible. The Reformed sola<br />
Scriptura adage evolves from <strong>the</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g that Scripture is <strong>the</strong> product <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit, or<br />
‘dictation by <strong>the</strong> Spirit’ (Neuser 1994:67-71), <strong>and</strong> that human be<strong>in</strong>gs are not capable <strong>of</strong> know<strong>in</strong>g<br />
God without <strong>the</strong> Word. The certa<strong>in</strong>ty <strong>of</strong> faith thus depends on <strong>the</strong> correlation <strong>of</strong> Spirit <strong>and</strong> Word.<br />
In order to affirm <strong>the</strong> au<strong>the</strong>nticity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bible as God’s Word, <strong>the</strong> believer depends on two<br />
different but related efficacies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit. First, <strong>the</strong> Spirit is <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> human testimonies<br />
as written down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bible; <strong>and</strong> second, <strong>the</strong> Spirit’s work is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> believer,<br />
testify<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> God <strong>and</strong> transform<strong>in</strong>g faith <strong>in</strong>to certa<strong>in</strong>ty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> promise <strong>of</strong> salvation.<br />
Calv<strong>in</strong> states that “<strong>the</strong> testimony <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit is more excellent than all reason. For as God alone<br />
is a fit witness <strong>of</strong> himself <strong>in</strong> his Word, so also <strong>the</strong> Word will not f<strong>in</strong>d acceptance <strong>in</strong> men’s hearts<br />
before it is sealed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ward testimony <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit. The same Spirit, <strong>the</strong>refore, who has<br />
spoken through <strong>the</strong> mouths <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prophets must penetrate <strong>in</strong>to our hearts to persuade us that <strong>the</strong>y<br />
faithfully proclaimed what had been div<strong>in</strong>ely comm<strong>and</strong>ed” (Inst. 1.7.4).<br />
Calv<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
Calv<strong>in</strong>’s works show only one obvious reference to <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>: <strong>the</strong> rejection <strong>of</strong> miraculous <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> gift <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institutes 4.19.18. Calv<strong>in</strong>, who was more outspoken on this issue<br />
than Lu<strong>the</strong>r was, addresses <strong>and</strong> rejects <strong>the</strong> Roman Catholic tradition <strong>of</strong> extreme unction, <strong>the</strong> one<br />
sacrament explicitly deal<strong>in</strong>g with physical <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. He identifies <strong>the</strong> sacrament <strong>of</strong> extreme<br />
unction as a “fictitious sacrament” <strong>and</strong> a “mere hypocritical stage-play” (Inst. 4.19.18). Calv<strong>in</strong>’s<br />
cessation <strong>the</strong>ology should be understood aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> background <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman Catholic—<br />
Protestant polemic. After all, from <strong>the</strong> outset <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformation process, <strong>the</strong> Reformers aimed at<br />
purify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole pattern <strong>of</strong> Roman Catholic worship (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sacraments, sa<strong>in</strong>ts, shr<strong>in</strong>es<br />
<strong>and</strong> relics) <strong>of</strong> mislead<strong>in</strong>g, false <strong>and</strong> even demonic <strong>in</strong>fluences, <strong>and</strong> that also <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>the</strong><br />
phenomenon <strong>of</strong> miracles (cf. Langstaff 1999:100, 119; Hejzlar 2007:48). Calv<strong>in</strong>’s reason<strong>in</strong>g was<br />
that miracles led believers away from true worship, <strong>and</strong> made people forget that <strong>the</strong> permanent<br />
signs <strong>of</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e revelation, namely baptism <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord’s supper, had replaced <strong>the</strong> temporary<br />
signs <strong>of</strong> Jesus’ time. He acknowledged that miraculous <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>s existed <strong>in</strong> Jesus’ time, as<br />
recounted by <strong>the</strong> Scriptures, but that <strong>the</strong>se were outdated <strong>and</strong> did not occur anymore after <strong>the</strong><br />
apostolic time (cf. Porterfield 2002:233). The only function <strong>of</strong> those early Christian miracles was<br />
to <strong>in</strong>troduce <strong>and</strong> to perpetuate <strong>the</strong> Gospel among <strong>the</strong> non-believers. In his study on John Calv<strong>in</strong>’s<br />
writ<strong>in</strong>gs on <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> miraculous <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, Pavel Hejzlar (2007) <strong>in</strong>dicates that accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
Calv<strong>in</strong>, miraculous <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> had lost its effect s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> Gospel had found its way <strong>in</strong>to this world,<br />
