motifs were engaged with Reformed <strong>the</strong>ological discourse? Can pneumatology be approached<br />

from <strong>the</strong>se motifs? Would it be possible to discern some <strong>in</strong>tersections <strong>of</strong> culturally determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

health notions <strong>and</strong> particular motifs <strong>in</strong> Reformed pneumatological thought? Are <strong>the</strong>re<br />

<strong>in</strong>surmountable differences that h<strong>in</strong>der an encounter between contextual frames <strong>of</strong> health <strong>and</strong><br />

contextual Reformed pneumatology? Or could it be that new ideas or alternative constructs with<br />

regard to health arise, that fit with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformed pneumatological matrix <strong>and</strong> connect with<br />

African health ideas? Answer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se secondary questions will assist <strong>in</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> research<br />

problem.<br />

4. Research hypo<strong>the</strong>sis<br />

The situation <strong>of</strong> multiple African health conceptualizations can be considered as <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong><br />

new possibilities for speak<strong>in</strong>g about God <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> from a Reformed perspective, if I succeed<br />

<strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se multiple health ideas to pneumatological discourse. There are at least two<br />

reasons for l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> to a focus on <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. The first reason is that <strong>the</strong><br />

recent pneumatological renaissance has brought to <strong>the</strong> fore that <strong>the</strong> ways <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit are diverse,<br />

abound<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> open to <strong>the</strong> experiences <strong>of</strong> believers <strong>in</strong> any context. The Spirit always f<strong>in</strong>ds new<br />

<strong>and</strong> surpris<strong>in</strong>g ways to connect people to God. The implication is that pneumatological discourse<br />

is open, wide-rang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> contextual, which means that an orientation to <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit holds<br />

<strong>the</strong> promise <strong>of</strong> new statements about God <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. The second reason is that, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> African<br />

context, <strong>the</strong> relation between Spirit <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> is very important. The effectiveness <strong>of</strong><br />

Pentecostal <strong>the</strong>ology, which is displayed by <strong>the</strong> significant growth <strong>of</strong> Pentecostal churches all<br />

over <strong>the</strong> region <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Africa, seems to affirm <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k between Spirit <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. The impact <strong>of</strong> African traditional religion (ATR) on contemporary Christian ideas about<br />

<strong>spirit</strong>s, illness <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> also shows how crucial <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k between Spirit <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> Africa<br />

is. Thus, <strong>the</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> this research is that a focus on <strong>the</strong> person <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Spirit will open up Reformed <strong>the</strong>ological discourse for new <strong>in</strong>sights on health <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

African context.<br />

A pneumatological orientation may encourage new th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g on God <strong>and</strong> health from a Reformed<br />

perspective by emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g various characteristics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> God. The Holy Spirit can be<br />

identified as <strong>the</strong> bond <strong>of</strong> love between Fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> Son, as <strong>the</strong> ecstatic God, as <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong><br />

adoption, as <strong>the</strong> cosmic Spirit <strong>and</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> life <strong>and</strong> as <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> Christ. These underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>gs<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> person <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit can assist <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g African health discourses <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ological discourse, <strong>and</strong> thus <strong>in</strong> explor<strong>in</strong>g new articulations <strong>of</strong> God <strong>and</strong> health from a<br />

Reformed perspective.<br />
