manifests itself, but it is def<strong>in</strong>itive <strong>and</strong> conclusive, because it is demarcated by <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit<br />

who represents <strong>the</strong> ultimate victory <strong>in</strong> Christ.<br />

The importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> complex concept <strong>of</strong> power is expressed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prom<strong>in</strong>ence <strong>of</strong> a <strong>spirit</strong>ual<br />

warfare hermeneutic with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse. Spiritual warfare <strong>in</strong>volves <strong>the</strong><br />

belief <strong>in</strong> an ongo<strong>in</strong>g battle between good <strong>and</strong> evil <strong>spirit</strong>s, with <strong>the</strong> outcome <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> battle hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

direct consequences for <strong>the</strong> visible reality. The relevance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>spirit</strong>ual warfare idea is that it<br />

provides a framework for expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g illness <strong>and</strong> misfortune <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> everyday life <strong>of</strong> believers: evil,<br />

<strong>in</strong> whatever manifestation, is attributed to <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> evil <strong>spirit</strong>s <strong>and</strong> demons. Spiritual warfare<br />

concepts are firmly rooted <strong>in</strong> African traditional religious ideas as well as <strong>in</strong> biblical texts, <strong>of</strong><br />

which Ephesians 6:12 is <strong>the</strong> cornerstone. The <strong>spirit</strong>ual warfare discourse becomes tangible <strong>in</strong><br />

exorcism or deliverance rituals, <strong>in</strong> which possess<strong>in</strong>g demons are driven out with a powerful<br />

petition to <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. The presupposition is that <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>in</strong>tervenes on behalf<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> possessed believer, s<strong>in</strong>ce man is not able to overcome <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> evil <strong>spirit</strong>s<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependently. The comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> a material conception <strong>of</strong> evil, an <strong>in</strong>terventionist <strong>the</strong>ology, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> salvation as life <strong>in</strong> abundance (which def<strong>in</strong>itely <strong>in</strong>cludes health <strong>and</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> present tense) constitutes <strong>the</strong> foundation <strong>of</strong> exorcism or deliverance m<strong>in</strong>istries.<br />

The <strong>spirit</strong>ual warfare <strong>in</strong>terpretation relies on <strong>the</strong> absolute power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, <strong>the</strong> ultimate<br />

life-giv<strong>in</strong>g force <strong>of</strong> God. The power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit br<strong>in</strong>gs a new cosmic order <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sense that <strong>the</strong><br />

power <strong>of</strong> evil forces has been demarcated <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> perspective <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gospel is central: liberation<br />

<strong>and</strong> salvation become reality <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> believer’s perspective on life. The experienced liberation <strong>and</strong><br />

salvation through <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit are expressed <strong>in</strong> <strong>spirit</strong>ual gifts like speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> tongues,<br />

<strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> prophesy<strong>in</strong>g. The manifestation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit’s powerful presence is usually also<br />

embedded <strong>in</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> rituals, <strong>and</strong> perhaps <strong>the</strong> most prom<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se rituals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-based<br />

<strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> scene is <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g oil. The (olive) oil represents <strong>the</strong> promise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

div<strong>in</strong>e power enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> believer, which allows <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>in</strong>tment to be<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpreted as equal to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sacraments: it is a sign <strong>of</strong> God’s salvation <strong>in</strong> a very<br />

tangible way. Just like <strong>the</strong> oil is a symbol <strong>of</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e power, so is <strong>the</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> prophet seen as a<br />

medium <strong>of</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e power; fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> personal change <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> believer after exorcism or<br />

<strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> rituals is likewise <strong>in</strong>terpreted as <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e power <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> believer.<br />

The various aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse, as described <strong>in</strong> this chapter, revolve<br />

around one particular notion: <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> power. It has become clear that <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> power<br />

covers more than one mean<strong>in</strong>g (vital force, <strong>spirit</strong> force, Holy Spirit force), but that <strong>the</strong>se<br />

different, yet related, mean<strong>in</strong>gs share common ground: power is <strong>the</strong> postulation <strong>of</strong> health, well-<br />
