church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> would be deprived <strong>of</strong> its mean<strong>in</strong>g if <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> life-giv<strong>in</strong>g power were<br />

absent. The life-giv<strong>in</strong>g power, cont<strong>in</strong>uously sought by man, has become a synonym <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Spirit, <strong>the</strong> all-embrac<strong>in</strong>g, pervad<strong>in</strong>g power <strong>of</strong> God. And this power <strong>of</strong> God is understood as <strong>the</strong><br />

power that can truly meet <strong>the</strong> existential needs <strong>of</strong> believers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> African context, <strong>and</strong> that can<br />

withst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> threat <strong>of</strong> evil for <strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong> man (cf. Anderson 1990:73). The Holy Spirit, <strong>the</strong> lifegiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

power <strong>of</strong> God, is thoroughly <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> human needs like <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

protection <strong>and</strong> victory amidst <strong>spirit</strong>ual warfare, ano<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>and</strong> material bless<strong>in</strong>g. In this way,<br />

<strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> life-giv<strong>in</strong>g power, transposed to <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, functions as a<br />

parameter <strong>of</strong> how health, illness <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> are viewed with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

discourse.<br />

5.4.3 Power as an agency <strong>of</strong> transformation<br />

The church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse also covers <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>and</strong> communal<br />

transformation. The church has become <strong>the</strong> site where people seek help for positive changes <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir life. Heal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a physical ailment, term<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> demon possession, a breakthrough <strong>in</strong><br />

pastoral m<strong>in</strong>istry or bus<strong>in</strong>ess endeavors — are all conditions begg<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> rituals <strong>in</strong> which<br />

pastor <strong>and</strong> client call upon <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit, hop<strong>in</strong>g for a transformation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> status quo.<br />

Hence, <strong>the</strong> quest for change, restoration <strong>and</strong> transformation is <strong>in</strong>extricably l<strong>in</strong>ked with <strong>the</strong><br />

concept <strong>of</strong> power, because <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit is considered to be a medium <strong>of</strong> renewal <strong>and</strong><br />

transformation. In at least four different, but related, dimensions, <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit br<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

change <strong>and</strong> transformation: (1) <strong>in</strong> a religious sense, <strong>in</strong> which an <strong>in</strong>dividual or a group<br />

experiences an existential redeem<strong>in</strong>g change <strong>in</strong> life, like for example exorcism rituals; (2) Or<br />

change <strong>in</strong> a socio-economic sense, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit is experienced as a medium<br />

who accompanies <strong>and</strong> guides people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tribulations <strong>the</strong>y are fac<strong>in</strong>g due to an alter<strong>in</strong>g society,<br />

such as <strong>the</strong> transition from a rural society to a modern urban nation; (3) Or change <strong>in</strong> a political<br />

sense, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit plays a crucial role <strong>in</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> transform<strong>in</strong>g<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g power relations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> political <strong>and</strong> religious authorities; (4) Or change <strong>in</strong> an<br />

ecclesiological sense, <strong>in</strong> which call<strong>in</strong>g upon <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>in</strong>stigates a process <strong>of</strong><br />

democratization as far as <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> power <strong>and</strong> authority with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church as an <strong>in</strong>stitute<br />

is concerned.<br />

Individual <strong>and</strong> communal religious transformation<br />

The relation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit’s power <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual transformation f<strong>in</strong>ds expression <strong>in</strong> <strong>spirit</strong>ual<br />

<strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong>terventions like exorcism rituals. This process <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual transformation is<br />

<strong>in</strong>carnated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ritual <strong>of</strong> exorcism when <strong>the</strong> believer experiences liberation through <strong>the</strong> cast<strong>in</strong>g<br />
