for Jesus’ holistic approach to <strong>the</strong> restoration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> community. However, <strong>the</strong><br />

image <strong>of</strong> Jesus as an all-round healer who is able to address <strong>spirit</strong>ual, physical <strong>and</strong> social<br />

afflictions also <strong>in</strong>duces some hesitation among African Christian <strong>the</strong>ologians, for <strong>the</strong> emphasis<br />

on Jesus’ holistic <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> abilities might trigger an association with <strong>the</strong> traditional healer: when<br />

Jesus is presented as healer, most <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> well-known <strong>and</strong> familiar traditional<br />

healer emerges before him (Br<strong>in</strong>kman 2007:296).<br />

Despite <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> association with <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> African traditional healer, Diane St<strong>in</strong>ton<br />

(2006:64-71; 2006) shows that <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> Jesus <strong>the</strong> healer is <strong>the</strong> most powerful <strong>and</strong> conv<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g<br />

image <strong>of</strong> Jesus <strong>in</strong> African Christianity. St<strong>in</strong>ton works out four levels <strong>of</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g that African<br />

believers attach to <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> Jesus as a healer. Firstly, <strong>the</strong> efficacies <strong>of</strong> Jesus’ <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> powers<br />

is <strong>in</strong>terpreted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sense that Jesus restores life, that he mends what was broken, <strong>and</strong> that he<br />

<strong>in</strong>fuses strength when human life is weak. Jesus as a healer <strong>the</strong>n means that Jesus is <strong>in</strong> control <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> restoration <strong>of</strong> life. The second mean<strong>in</strong>g attached to <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> Jesus as a healer is that Jesus<br />

aims at holistic <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. Restoration cannot take place if only some parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g are<br />

taken <strong>in</strong>to account, or if <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g community <strong>and</strong> its responsibility are ignored dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> process. The image <strong>of</strong> Jesus as a healer implies <strong>the</strong> holistic aspect <strong>of</strong> health, illness <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. The third mean<strong>in</strong>g identified by St<strong>in</strong>ton describes how Jesus is mightier than evil. As a<br />

healer, he is <strong>the</strong> one who overcomes destruction. It is not surpris<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>n, that <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong><br />

Jesus as <strong>the</strong> victor, as <strong>the</strong> great Physician, is at <strong>the</strong> core <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christologies <strong>of</strong> AICs <strong>and</strong> PCCs.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> Jesus as a healer represents Jesus’ role as <strong>the</strong> one who br<strong>in</strong>gs salvation.<br />

Jesus’ <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> works are <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sically bound up with concepts <strong>of</strong> Him as a savior <strong>and</strong> redeemer.<br />

His <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> is pr<strong>of</strong>oundly <strong>the</strong> liberation <strong>and</strong> redemption <strong>of</strong> evil <strong>and</strong> s<strong>in</strong>.<br />

5.3.5 Heal<strong>in</strong>g rituals<br />

Restoration, <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> or deliverance efforts are usually accompanied by <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> practices <strong>and</strong><br />

rituals. An <strong>in</strong>dispensable <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> ritual is prayer, for prayer (with or without fast<strong>in</strong>g) provides <strong>the</strong><br />

sett<strong>in</strong>g for o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> practices <strong>and</strong> rituals. Many rituals embrace <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> herbs, oils,<br />

perfumes <strong>and</strong> love potions, but <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g oil <strong>and</strong> white h<strong>and</strong>kerchiefs ga<strong>in</strong>ed particular<br />

importance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> discourse. Besides <strong>the</strong> prayer scheme <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

certa<strong>in</strong> objects, <strong>the</strong> healer him- or herself is also important <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> ritual. In <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sub-sections more attention will be paid to <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> particular aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> rituals:<br />

<strong>the</strong> ano<strong>in</strong>tment with oil, <strong>the</strong> person <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prophet healer, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> redef<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

personality embedded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> ritual.<br />
